Intellectual Property (IP) is important for Applied Materials to protect our innovations and products, maintain our competitive advantages against competitors, and create future growth opportunities. IP strategy defines when, where, and how patents are filed, prosecuted, and maintained at various business unit and across different jurisdictions. An optimized IP strategy relies on not only Applied’s product & technology roadmap, technology status, but also competitors’ IP strategy. By benchmarking to competitor’s IP strategy, Applied can adjust its strategy to achieve better protection and better risk management. Benchmarking to competitor IP strategy also enables us to identify technological trends, white space, and potential licensing opportunities etc. However, IP strategy is not directly published and there are tremendous data preprocessing, standardization and assumptions required. This project aims to develop a platform which enables IP strategy benchmarking, so as to enable data driven IP strategy optimization. The platform is expected to include an inhouse data processing pipeline, metrics calculation methodology, interactive dashboard, and a chatbot for IP strategy related queries.

At the end of the internship, the intern should have :

• gained data preprocessing and analytics skills
• capability of building interactive dashboards to track business metrics
• an understanding of IP strategy and its financial / business impact
• basic understanding of GenAI and prompt engineering and application thereof
