Description
ABC Supply is North America’s largest wholesale distributor of exterior and interior building products.
ABC Supply is proud to be an employee-first company. In fact, we have won the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award every year since its inception in 2007, and Glassdoor has named us one of the best places to work in the country. Be part of a company that recognizes your talents, rewards your efforts, and helps you reach your full potential. At ABC Supply, we have YOUR future covered.
Role Overview:
As Product Portfolio Manager for the Back Office portfolio, you will define the vision, strategy, and investment direction for the enterprise capabilities that enable ABC Supply’s accounting, finance, credit, legal, and human resources functions. The portfolio includes the processes, products, platforms, data, and integrations that support financial stewardship, workforce effectiveness, risk management, compliance, and scalable corporate operations.
You will serve as an enterprise capability strategist, connecting organizational strategy, end-to-end process performance, associate experience, regulatory obligations, and technology investment. You will look beyond individual applications, projects, and functional requests to determine which back-office capabilities should be invested in, modernized, simplified, standardized, consolidated, or retired.
Working with Domain Process Owners, Product Managers, Architecture, Delivery, Data and Analytics, Information Security, Change Management, and executive leadership, you will establish priorities, guide investment decisions, and create visibility into measurable outcomes. You will balance operational stability, control effectiveness, associate experience, data integrity, privacy, compliance, growth, and long-term platform sustainability.
This role includes direct people leadership of Product Managers assigned to the Back Office portfolio. Product Managers own product and capability strategies and near-term roadmaps; the Product Portfolio Manager ensures the portfolio collectively advances enterprise objectives and enables the achievement of expected value.
Key Responsibilities:
Enterprise Capability Strategy:
Maintain an enterprise view of the capabilities enabled by the Back Office portfolio across accounting, finance, credit, legal, and human resources. Identify capability gaps, duplication, fragmentation, manual work, and unnecessary complexity. Ensure decisions improve end-to-end enterprise performance rather than optimizing one function in isolation.
Portfolio Vision and Investment Direction:
Define and communicate the Back Office portfolio vision, strategy, and roadmap. Align investment to organizational and functional objectives, process performance, associate experience, capability maturity, risk, compliance, and expected value.
Strategic Portfolio Lifecycle Management:
Balance innovation, operational health, regulatory needs, technical debt, and sustainability. Guide enhancement, modernization, consolidation, replacement, and retirement decisions across the portfolio.
Outcome and Benefit Realization:
Translate objectives into measurable portfolio outcomes. Ensure material investments identify the capability being advanced, intended outcomes, success measures, and the Domain Process Owner accountable for realizing benefits. Distinguish delivery completion from outcome achievement.
Enterprise Process Alignment:
Partner with Domain Process Owners to improve end-to-end process effectiveness, scalability, standardization, and measurement while preserving clear accountability for domain decisions, adoption, and value realization.
Portfolio Health and Investment Effectiveness:
Establish an evidence-based view of process performance, adoption, reliability, data quality, technical debt, lifecycle risk, cost, and realized value. Make visible where investment is consumed by instability, customizations, fragmentation, or recurring corrective work.
Portfolio Governance and Prioritization:
Lead transparent, evidence-based prioritization across competing opportunities. Recommend when to invest, adjust, expand, stop, or redirect work based on strategic alignment, value, risk, and portfolio capacity.
Cross-Functional Leadership:
Create alignment across Product, Domain Process Owners, UX, Business Analysis, Architecture, Engineering, Delivery, Data and Analytics, Change Management, and Operations. Surface trade-offs and decisions requiring executive action.
People Leadership:
Hire, coach, and develop Product Managers. Establish clear expectations, strengthen product management capability, and foster accountability, systems thinking, collaboration, and an outcome-oriented culture.
How Success is Defined:
The Back Office Product Portfolio Manager is successful when the organization can demonstrate that:
- Back Office investments are explicitly aligned to organizational objectives and the measurable needs of accounting, finance, credit, legal, and human resources.
- Investment choices are based on enterprise capability needs and expected outcomes, not primarily on application demand or project sponsorship.
- End-to-end processes are becoming more effective, scalable, standardized, and measurable.
- Expected benefits are verified with Domain Process Owners and unrealized value is visible and acted upon.
- Operational instability, recurring issues, control gaps, technical debt, data-quality concerns, privacy and compliance risks, and systemic process weaknesses are visible and actively addressed.
- The Back Office ecosystem is becoming simpler, healthier, more secure, more reliable, and more sustainable while improving the experience of associates and functional teams.
- Leadership has sufficient evidence to decide where to invest, modernize, standardize, consolidate, retire, or stop.
Essential Attributes, Skills and Experience:
Product and Portfolio Leadership:
7+ years of Product Management experience, including 5+ years leading portfolios, platforms, or enterprise business systems. Demonstrated experience with complex back-office, corporate services, or shared-services capability portfolios.
Enterprise Capability Strategy:
Ability to evaluate investments through enterprise capabilities, end-to-end process outcomes, and long-term organizational needs. Skilled at moving discussions beyond applications and departmental requests toward enterprise choices and trade-offs.
Systems Thinking:
Ability to understand how process, policy, data, technology, operating practices, and organizational accountability interact. Recognizes when an application issue reflects a broader process, data, governance, architecture, or operating-model concern.
Strategic and Financial Acumen:
Experience aligning investments to strategy, assessing business cases, evaluating trade-offs, and using financial, operational, and qualitative evidence to guide decisions.
Outcome and Benefit Realization:
Experience defining success measures, establishing baselines, monitoring adoption and operational change, and validating whether intended benefits were realized.
Enterprise Process Expertise:
Ability to understand complex cross-functional processes and partner effectively with Domain Process Owners and operational leaders.
Technology and Platform Knowledge:
Strong understanding of enterprise finance, credit, legal, human capital, document and workflow, data, and integration platforms; lifecycle management; security and privacy considerations; and architectural constraints, with the judgment to convert technical considerations into investment decisions.
Organizational Leadership:
Demonstrated success leading and developing Product Managers and influencing executives, domain leaders, and delivery teams without relying on direct authority.
Communication and Decision Leadership:
Exceptional ability to communicate portfolio health, outcomes, trade-offs, risks, and decisions to audiences ranging from delivery teams to executive leadership.
Desirable Attributes, Skills and Experience:
- Experience with enterprise financial management, credit, human capital management, legal operations, document management, workflow, or comparable corporate platforms.
- Wholesale distribution experience and knowledge of accounting, finance, credit, legal, human resources, compliance, or shared-services operating models.
- Experience leading enterprise transformation, platform modernization, or process-standardization initiatives.
