What you'll be doing

As a Senior Director, Trading Credit Risk, you’ll lead the oversight of counterparty credit risk for private credit lending across a global portfolio that spans Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia Pacific. You’ll adjudicate complex trading, financing, and lending facilities for private credit funds and other non-bank financial institution counterparties, while helping shape sound credit strategies, policies, and risk practices. In this role, you’ll partner closely with senior leaders across Global Markets, Corporate Banking, and Risk Management to ensure business opportunities align with the bank’s risk appetite and credit quality standards. You’ll also provide expert guidance on industry trends, portfolio developments, and emerging risks, while representing Risk Management with senior executives, auditors, regulators, and clients when needed.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Details on your work arrangement (proportions of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of interview.

How you'll succeed

  • Credit adjudication and portfolio oversight - Adjudicate complex counterparty credit facilities and transactions within your delegated approval authority, and provide recommendations on transactions above that authority to senior approvers. Oversee a designated portfolio of private credit and broader non-bank financial institution counterparties to ensure sound credit quality and disciplined risk management.

  • Risk strategy and policy development - Develop, recommend, and implement credit policies, standards, and practices that support prudent growth and align with the bank’s risk appetite. Help shape product- and client-related policies that guide business strategy across trading, financing, and lending activities.

  • Business partnership - Work in close partnership with senior leaders across Global Markets, Corporate Banking, and Risk Management to assess opportunities, challenge excessive risk, and support informed business decisions. Help ensure intended products, transactions, and client strategies are consistent with portfolio objectives and credit quality expectations.

  • Industry insight and thought leadership - Build and maintain deep expertise in private credit and related sectors to identify trends, emerging risks, and market developments that could affect the portfolio. Share clear, timely analysis and present written and verbal recommendations to senior executives and credit committees as required.

  • Governance and control - Ensure risk ratings are objective, transparent, and reflective of transaction risk, while maintaining compliance with internal policies, legal and reputational risk requirements, and regulatory expectations. Support examinations and ongoing engagement with auditors, regulators, and internal stakeholders as needed.

  • Influence and leadership - Provide direction to senior credit risk managers on accounts within their delegated approval authority and contribute to a strong, consistent approach to decision-making across the portfolio. Bring credibility, sound judgment, and practical market knowledge to complex discussions involving clients, business leaders, and senior risk partners.

Who you are

  • You bring deep credit risk expertise. You have extensive experience in counterparty credit risk, trading credit risk, or a related credit adjudication environment, with strong judgment in evaluating complex facilities, structures, and counterparties.

  • You understand private credit and financing products. You have comprehensive knowledge of private credit products and structures, along with strong understanding of trading, financing, lending, and derivative-related risks in a global markets environment.

  • You think strategically and act decisively. You’re able to balance risk and opportunity, apply sound decision-making within delegated authority, and make clear recommendations on complex or high-impact credit matters.

  • You’re an influential partner. You build strong relationships with senior business leaders, risk partners, and external stakeholders, and you communicate with confidence in situations that require credibility, challenge, and collaboration.

  • You communicate complex ideas clearly. You have strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present thoughtful analysis, interpret market and industry developments, and tailor recommendations for senior executives and committees.

  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and live our values of trust, teamwork, and accountability.
