Title: Traffic Specialist III
Client: Southern Company Services
Location: Calera, AL

Contract: 3 Years

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Traffic Specialist III to provide transportation and logistics support across Southern Company business units. This role is responsible for determining the most effective transportation methods for materials and equipment during routine operations, planned and forced outages, and emergency storm restoration efforts.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with transportation logistics, carrier management, DOT regulations, hazardous materials, freight coordination, and transportation cost management.

Key Responsibilities
Coordinate transportation of materials and equipment for internal customers.
Determine the best transportation mode based on urgency, cost, equipment requirements, and delivery needs.
Support logistics activities during routine operations, outages, and emergency storm restoration.
Manage shipments using:
LTL
Full Truckload
Parcel
Hotshot
Dedicated transportation
Air freight
Resolve transportation and logistics issues and recommend effective solutions.
Coordinate with carriers, suppliers, vendors, and internal customers.
Ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.
Review freight invoices for accuracy.
Negotiate freight rates, pricing, and carrier agreements.
Maintain knowledge of DOT regulations and CFR 49 requirements.
Support transportation of hazardous materials, including Class 1–9 Hazmat shipments.
Coordinate oversized/overweight transportation requirements.
Support domestic and international freight shipments.
Apply INCO Terms and international shipping requirements as applicable.
Maintain strong carrier relationships to support service quality and freight savings.

 

Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior experience in the transportation, freight, logistics, or supply chain field.
Experience with LTL, Truckload, Parcel, Hotshot, Dedicated, and Air transportation.
Strong knowledge of:
DOT regulations
CFR 49
NMFC classifications
Hazardous materials transportation
Oversized/overweight freight
Carrier operations
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and time-sensitive shipments.
Ability to work independently and make critical logistics decisions.

 

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field.
Experience with international freight and INCO Terms.
Knowledge of Power Delivery and Power Generation materials and equipment.
Experience negotiating carrier contracts and freight pricing.
Schedule Requirements
Must be available for on-call and shift work.
Must be able to support planned outages, forced outages, and emergency storm restoration activities.
