HVAC Project General Foreman (UN)

Project General Foreman

Service Mechanical HVAC & Retrofit Projects

Johnson Controls helps customers create safer, smarter, and more efficient buildings. In this hands-on field leadership role, you will guide complex commercial and industrial HVAC installation and retrofit work from turnover through completion, helping ensure every project is delivered safely, on schedule, and to the expected quality standard.

Role Overview

The Project General Foreman serves as the senior field leader supporting the Branch Installation Manager. You will coordinate crews, subcontractors, materials, schedules, and customer communication while keeping a close eye on safety, productivity, quality, and project margin. This role bridges field execution and project management with the technical depth needed to keep mechanical HVAC projects moving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead field crews and subcontractors on commercial and industrial HVAC installation, retrofit, and mechanical service projects.
  • Plan daily work, assign manpower, and adjust resources to maintain schedule commitments and productive field execution.
  • Review drawings, specifications, submittals, and scope documents to confirm installation requirements and field readiness.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment logistics, site access, and subcontractor activities.
  • Troubleshoot field issues, resolve constraints, and make timely decisions to keep work progressing safely and efficiently.
  • Support estimating efforts through field assessments, walk-throughs, labor forecasting, quote reviews, and scope validation.
  • Monitor labor productivity, material use, budget performance, and scope changes, and escalate risks or cost impacts early.
  • Serve as a primary field contact for customers, vendors, internal teams, and subcontractors during project execution.
  • Enforce safety policies, conduct jobsite safety meetings and inspections, and verify that crews use proper PPE and safe work practices.
  • Maintain quality control, verify work against design requirements and manufacturer recommendations, and support punch list and closeout activities.

How You Will Do It

  • Own the outcome with accountability, safety, and integrity by setting clear expectations, following through on commitments, and keeping the jobsite organized and compliant.
  • Stay close to the work and remove obstacles quickly by watching field conditions, material flow, manpower levels, and customer access needs before they affect progress.
  • Improve every day through candor and problem-solving by reviewing progress, identifying risks early, and applying practical fixes that protect schedule, quality, and margin.
  • Win as one team by working closely with the Branch Installation Manager, project management, subcontractors, vendors, and customers to keep communication clear and decisions fast.
  • Use your HVAC and mechanical knowledge to guide installation quality on chillers, split systems, mini-splits, DX systems, packaged units, RTUs, AHUs, fan-powered boxes, VAV systems, and related controls work.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 7 years of commercial and industrial HVAC experience.
  • Experience leading mechanical installation or retrofit projects in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising technicians, field personnel, and subcontractors.
  • Strong understanding of commercial and industrial HVAC equipment, mechanical retrofit and replacement work, installation practices, and system troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and equipment submittals.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC control systems.
  • Experience with project scheduling, workforce planning, labor forecasting, and basic cost control.
  • Strong communication, planning, and decision-making skills in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to work in commercial, industrial, manufacturing, and plant environments, access rooftops, mechanical rooms, and active construction sites, and travel throughout the assigned service area as needed.
  • Flexibility to support early mornings, evenings, weekends, and emergency response situations when project demands require it.

Nice to Have

  • Technical training in HVAC, mechanical systems, construction management, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting estimating, project management, or field operations.
  • Experience reviewing equipment submittals, developing execution strategies, or supporting quote reviews and scope validation.
