Position Title: Visiting Medical Officer - Colorectal Surgery
Employment Type: Temporary for 12 months, commencing December 2026
Hours per week: Zero hours sessional contract
Position Grade: Visiting Medical Officer (VMO)
Salary: As per the award
Enterprise Agreement: Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014

Position Requirements:
• Provision of clinical services to patients designated as under your direct care, to outpatients and to patients you are asked to consult in general, colorectal and trauma surgery;
• Provide services relating to all aspects of colorectal surgery as well as general surgery, hernia surgery, laparoscopic surgery, colonoscopy and endoscopy;
• Participate in teaching and research duties;
• Promotion of good patient care and the good reputation of the department and the hospital;
• Ensure the numbers of elective waiting list patients do not exceed the National and State waiting time benchmarks or exceed the capacity of the contractually agreed theatre time availability to undertake the wait list cases, in accordance with NSW Health Policy;
• Participate in the General Surgery and Trauma on-call roster.

Selection Criteria:
Possess, or be eligible to possess, specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia;
Possess Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997;
Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of clinical practice in General and Colorectal Surgery commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position; Post fellowship training in colorectal surgery (CSSANZ or equivalent) with high level laparoscopic skills and completion of definitive surgical trauma course is essential;
A strong research background, including attainment of or enrolment in a higher degree such as MS, PhD or MD, along with a significant number of publications, including in the area of inflammatory bowel disease, is considered very important;
Demonstrated commitment to teaching at specialty registrar, junior medical officer and undergraduate levels;
Demonstrated leadership skills that support and foster innovation to create a learning culture, with proven ability to improve the quality of services and patient care outcomes;
Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience;
Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment;
Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
