This is a closed/promotional recruitment.  To be considered, you must be currently employed with the City of Cypress.

Under general direction of a Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant supervises field, investigative, and/or administrative police operations, oversees officers assigned to patrol and specialized assignments, and performs supervisory, investigative, administrative, and community policing responsibilities. The Police Sergeant may also supervise detectives, civilian employees, volunteers, and other personnel as assigned.
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Supervise and participate in law enforcement and administrative work for assigned field or office operations including: traffic enforcement, patrol, investigations and training.
  • Prepare and review police reports, administrative documents, field training reports and employee performance evaluations.
  • Conduct and participate in daily briefings and training of personnel.
  • Participate in community relations programs.
  • Identify community concerns and collaborate with community members and partner organizations to develop solutions.
  • Monitor officer activities in the field to ensure Federal, State and local laws and guidelines are followed.
  • Supervise and/or conduct follow-up investigations which may include internal affairs investigations.
  • Appear in court and testify to present evidence.
  • Prepare and conduct timely and relevant presentations to people of various educational and socio-cultural backgrounds.
  • Maintain discipline and ensure that departmental and City rules, regulations and policies are implemented.
  • Act as a liaison to other law enforcement agencies.
  • Relieve superior officers during absences.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, coaching, and performance feedback to employees while promoting accountability, professional development, and organizational values.
  • Serve as the Watch Commander, as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree or a minimum of 60 semester units in Criminal Justice, Communications, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field, and a minimum of four years of full-time experience as a Police Officer, including at least two years of service with the Cypress Police Department. A Bachelor’s degree is highly desirable. Applicants must possess a California POST Intermediate Certificate, or meet the minimum requirements to obtain one, at the time of application. The selected candidate must obtain a California POST Supervisory Certificate within two years of appointment.
