Fire Alarm Technician – Service

Position Summary

The Fire Alarm Service Technician inspects, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs fire alarm and life safety systems for end-user and owner accounts, in accordance with NFPA 72 inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) requirements and local AHJ direction. The role responds to service calls and emergencies and executes small MAC (moves, adds, and changes) installations.

This is an independent, customer-facing role working primarily in occupied facilities. The technician diagnoses across systems and manufacturers they did not necessarily install, and is expected to support small installation work as part of the service department's scope.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform NFPA 72 inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) on existing fire alarm systems.

• Diagnose and repair trouble, supervisory, ground-fault, and device-level failures.

• Respond to service calls, including after-hours and emergency dispatch on a rotating basis.

• Perform small installations and MAC work: add or relocate devices, extend circuits, and reprogram panels.

• Program and reprogram FACPs across multiple manufacturer platforms.

• Complete inspection reports, deficiency reports, and service tickets accurately and on time.

• Identify and recommend repairs and upgrades; support quoting of time-and-materials and deficiency corrections.

• Coordinate inspections and retests with AHJs and building stakeholders.

• Maintain accurate service documentation and as-builts for serviced systems.

• Represent the company professionally in customer-occupied environments.

• Manage truck stock, tools, and test equipment.

• Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

• 3+ years of fire alarm service, inspection, or troubleshooting experience.

• Strong working knowledge of NFPA 72 ITM requirements and AHJ processes.

• Ability to troubleshoot and repair addressable and conventional systems across multiple platforms.

• Ability to perform small installations and MAC work independently.

• Strong customer-service orientation and professional communication.

• Valid driver's license and clean driving record; willing to participate in an on-call rotation.

• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role.

Preferred

• NICET Level II or higher in Fire Alarm Systems.

• Multi-platform programming experience (e.g., Notifier, Silent Knight, EST/Edwards, Simplex, Fire-Lite, Gamewell/Honeywell).

• Familiarity with ERCES / BDA, DAS, or sprinkler/monitoring integration.

• OSHA 10/30 and manufacturer service certifications.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a field-based service role performed primarily in occupied, operational customer facilities, with frequent daily travel between multiple sites. The employee must be able to walk sites and uneven terrain; climb and work from ladders and aerial/scissor lifts; work in mechanical/electrical rooms, ceilings, and confined spaces; and stand, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly. The role includes participation in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours or weekend emergency response. Work is performed with appropriate PPE, and the technician is expected to conduct themselves professionally in customer-occupied environments. Must be able to detect, determine, distinguish, inspect, assess, and adjust focus, and distinguish colors for cable and conductor identification. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required.
