Position Focus:

The Yale Center for Research Computing (YCRC) seeks a Computational Research Support Analyst to join the Center’s interdisciplinary Research Support group to support Yale’s Science Research Software Core (SRSC). The SRSC was created to address the growing need for advanced analytical and experimental research software. It provides faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students with affordable access to more than 50 specialized and widely used applications in the physical sciences and engineering — including Comsol, Ansys, Autodesk, and Mathematica.

The analyst’s responsibilities will include:

• Advising researchers on tool selection and applicability to their scientific problems
• Advising the YCRC on adoption of new software tools
• Managing vendor relationships, including understanding capabilities, licensing models, training/education opportunities.
• Installing, distributing, and tracking versions of SRSC software packages
• Supporting software packages on YCRC’s HPC clusters, where applicable
• Troubleshooting installation and usage problems
• Creating and maintaining user documentation
• Conducting outreach to Yale’s research community

The position requires excellent organization, communication skills, a service-oriented mindset, and the ability to work within a team while managing many simultaneous projects.

The YCRC supports the entire University.   Its research support team consists of approximately 10 PhD scientists who assist Yale researchers with all aspects of research computing, including Yale’s High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters with more than 40,000 cores, multiple petabytes of high-performance storage, and technologies for computational science and the analysis, sharing, and management of large-scale research data. This position will join that team while focusing on the SRSC’s mission.

The successful candidate will report to the Center’s Research Support Team Lead.The Yale Center for Research Computing is a core facility of the Provost’s Office governed jointly by the Vice Provost for Research and the University Vice President for Technology and Campus Services.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Extensive ability working in Linux environment.

2. Mastery of programming in at least one language such as Python or C.

3. Knowledge of software building and installation: e.g. make, autoconf, etc.

4. Self-starter. Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple projects/collaborations simultaneously.

5. Excellent written and oral communications skills.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1.Demonstrated experience with commercial scientific and engineering software such as COMSOL, Ansys, Autodesk, or Mathematica

2.Experience with high-performance computing in a Linux environment

3.Familiarity with software licensing models and license management for commercial packages

4.Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality user support to researchers

5.Experience developing user documentation, training materials, or community outreach

Principal Responsibilities

1. Collaborate with faculty and researchers to provide scientific computational expertise to enhance efficiency of research algorithms. 2. Interface with faculty to solicit requirements on how best to enhance the daily operations of the Yale's Center for Research Computing (YCRC).  3. Work with the HPC engineering team to implement these operational enhancements. 4. Provide technical support, computing assistance, and training to YCRC users primarily in the university's main campus departments in the natural and social sciences and engineering. This includes: a. Software installation and support of various scientific software packages. b. Support of research groups' computational research through consultation and design of software and systems. c. Parallel programming and performance tuning. d. Assistance with data management and sharing. e. Troubleshooting users' computational problems. 5. Investigate new computing technologies (in areas such as hardware, software, and networking, depending on the candidate's interests and expertise). 6. Develop and deliver training programs, seminars, and other outreach activities to a diverse community of faculty, students, and others sharing a common interest in advanced computing and data processing technologies for research.  Training will include basic and advanced programs in HPC and data science. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in a scientific or computational field plus two years of academic or scientific industry experience.
