MIG Welder/Fabricator

Work Schedule: Thursday – Sunday
Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Shift: 12-hour shift | 4 days per week

The MIG Welder / Fabricator is responsible for fabricating and welding non-structural sheet metal and light fabricated components used in industrial generator enclosures and power generation equipment. This position performs layout, fitting, MIG welding, grinding, and assembly of enclosure components, doors, brackets, supports, panels, compartments, louvers, baffles, and miscellaneous fabricated parts in accordance with engineering drawings and company quality standards.

The MIG Welder / Fabricator supports production by delivering high-quality fabricated components that are dimensionally accurate, aesthetically acceptable, and ready for assembly or painting.

Key Responsibilities:

Fabrication & Assembly

Fabricate and assemble non-structural components including:

• Enclosure wall panels 
• Roof assemblies 
• Doors and access panels 
• Louvers 
• Air intake and exhaust assemblies 
• Baffles 
• Brackets and mounting plates 
• Battery boxes 
• Control panel supports 
• Equipment mounting components 
• Hinges and latch assemblies 
• Sheet metal reinforcements 
• Miscellaneous fabricated components 

Assemble components using engineering drawings, fixtures, and work instructions.

MIG Welding

• Perform GMAW (MIG) welding on light-gauge and medium-gauge carbon steel components. 
• Weld sheet metal assemblies, brackets, supports, and fabricated components. 
• Produce clean, consistent welds with minimal distortion. 
• Perform stitch, fillet, plug, and intermittent welds as required. 
• Ensure weld appearance meets company quality standards. 
• Repair weld defects when necessary. 

Fit-Up & Layout

• Read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols. 
• Measure, mark, and lay out components for fabrication. 
• Fit and clamp assemblies prior to welding. 
• Verify dimensions, alignment, and squareness before final welding. 
• Utilize jigs, fixtures, and templates to maintain consistency. 
• Prepare parts for downstream operations such as paint and assembly. 

Equipment Operation

Safely operate:

• MIG welding machines 
• Spot welders (where applicable) 
• Plasma cutters 
• Grinders 
• Drill presses 
• Band saws 
• Ironworkers 
• Hand and power tools 
• Material handling equipment 
• Overhead cranes and forklifts (when certified) 

Grinding & Finishing

• Grind welds where required by engineering or cosmetic standards. 
• Remove weld spatter and sharp edges. 
• Deburr fabricated components. 
• Prepare assemblies for paint by ensuring smooth, clean surfaces. 
• Inspect finished parts for appearance and functionality.

Quality

• Perform first-piece and in-process inspections. 
• Verify fabricated parts meet engineering drawings and specifications. 
• Use measuring equipment including: 
• Tape measures 
• Combination squares 
• Calipers 
• Levels 
• Angle gauges 

• Identify and report material defects or drawing discrepancies. 
• Minimize scrap and rework through attention to detail. 

Production

• Complete fabrication assignments according to production schedules. 
• Maintain productivity while producing quality work. 
• Support changing production priorities. 
• Assist in reducing fabrication bottlenecks. 
• Accurately report completed work. 
• Cross-train on additional fabrication equipment and processes. 

Material Handling

• Safely move fabricated components between workstations. 
• Stage completed parts for assembly or paint. 
• Protect fabricated components from damage. 
• Assist with inventory organization within the department. 

Equipment Maintenance

• Perform daily inspections of welding equipment and tools. 
• Clean welding machines and workstations. 
• Replace welding consumables as needed. 
• Report equipment malfunctions promptly. 
• Maintain an organized work area. 

Safety

• Follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies. 
• Wear required PPE including welding helmet, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, welding sleeves, and steel-toed footwear. 
• Follow hot work procedures. 
• Utilize Lockout/Tagout procedures when required. 
• Maintain clean work areas utilizing 5S principles. 
• Report hazards, incidents, and near misses immediately. 

Teamwork

• Collaborate with fabrication, engineering, assembly, paint, quality, logistics, and maintenance departments. 
• Assist coworkers during production surges. 
• Cross-train to improve departmental flexibility. 
• Participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives. 
• Maintain a positive and professional attitude. 

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred. 
• Minimum 1–2 years of MIG welding or fabrication experience preferred. 
• Ability to read fabrication drawings and weld symbols. 
• Ability to pass a MIG welding qualification test. 
• Mechanical aptitude. 
• Reliable attendance and punctuality. 

Work Environment

• Manufacturing floor environment with exposure to machinery, noise, and metalworking processes.
• PPE required (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, hearing protection, etc.).

Requirements

• HS Diploma or equivalent, preferred 
• Manufacturing/Fabrication experience
• 2-3 years of MIG Welding experience, required
• Able to use power tools
• Able to read tape measure
• Able to lift 50 lbs
• Able to read blueprints
• Able to troubleshoot and problem solve
• Must be highly motivated
• Able to communicate and work well with others
• Read, write, and speak English fluently
• Must have reliable transportation
