Position Overview

The Automation Projects Engineer plays a critical role in driving manufacturing automation initiatives across our operations. This position is responsible for leading automation projects from concept through commissioning and handoff, while supporting productivity improvements, equipment standardization, and operational excellence goals. The successful candidate will directly contribute to increased manufacturing output, process optimization, and the implementation of advanced automation technologies that support Hunter Douglas' strategic growth objectives.

What You'll Do

  • Lead automation projects from concept development through commissioning, startup, and final handoff to operations.
  • Design, develop, program, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and industrial automation systems for manufacturing applications.
  • Integrate automation technologies including industrial networks, vision systems, VFDs, servo motion controls, and database connectivity platforms.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, maintenance, and quality teams to identify and implement process improvements that increase throughput and efficiency.
  • Manage and coordinate internal stakeholders, external suppliers, machine builders, and system integrators to ensure project success.
  • Support equipment standardization efforts and the deployment of best practices across manufacturing facilities.
  • Travel to manufacturing facilities, supplier locations, and customer sites to support project implementation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Drive troubleshooting and root cause analysis activities to improve equipment reliability and manufacturing performance.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing automation within industrial environments.
  • Proven experience leading automation projects from concept through commissioning and production handoff.
  • Hands-on PLC and HMI programming experience, preferably with Allen Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, IO-Link, or similar technologies.
  • Experience integrating automation equipment including VFDs, servo motion systems, vision systems, and manufacturing databases.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 60% domestically and internationally as required.
