JOB SUMMARY

The Overnight Maintenance Engineer plays a critical role in delivering that experience by ensuring the hotel remains safe, functional, clean, and well maintained throughout the overnight hours.

This position is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting facility and guest room issues, responding to service requests, monitoring building systems, and supporting the overall operation of the hotel during overnight hours. The Overnight Maintenance Engineer serves as the primary engineering representative on property during the overnight shift and helps ensure guests enjoy a seamless and comfortable stay.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on guestrooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas, and hotel equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, maintain, and repair HVAC, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, mechanical, and life-safety systems.
  • Respond promptly to guest service requests and maintenance work orders during overnight hours.
  • Complete overnight maintenance projects with minimal impact to guests and hotel operations.
  • Conduct routine property walks and inspections to identify safety hazards, maintenance concerns, and operational deficiencies.
  • Monitor building systems, equipment alarms, and operational controls to ensure proper functionality.
  • Replace lighting fixtures, lamps, ballasts, switches, outlets, and other basic electrical components as appropriate.
  • Perform painting, drywall repair, caulking, patching, furniture repair, and general upkeep throughout the property.
  • Assist with carpet care, tile maintenance, and general appearance standards.
  • Coordinate emergency repairs and communicate significant issues to the Chief Engineer as needed.
  • Deliver responsive, professional, and courteous service when interacting with guests.
  • Resolve guest maintenance concerns in a timely manner while minimizing service disruptions.
  • Maintain a positive and service-oriented attitude that reflects the values of Canopy Hotels and Lodging Dynamics.
  • Support a welcoming environment by maintaining guest-facing areas in excellent condition.
  • Follow all OSHA, fire life safety, lockout/tagout, chemical handling, and hotel safety procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, brand standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Report safety concerns, accidents, maintenance deficiencies, and equipment failures immediately.
  • Assist with emergency response procedures, including fire alarms, power outages, water leaks, guest room emergencies, and other incidents affecting hotel operations.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, inspection documentation, and shift reports.
  • Communicate effectively with the Chief Engineer and other departments regarding maintenance concerns and operational needs.
  • Support hotel initiatives, capital projects, and departmental goals as assigned.
  • Complete all required company training, brand training, and compliance courses.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support hotel operations and business needs

SKILLS & ABILITIES

This position requires the ability to work independently during overnight hours while maintaining strong communication and service standards.

  • Strong knowledge of building maintenance principles and hotel engineering operations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and refrigeration issues.
  • Ability to read and follow technical manuals, safety procedures, equipment instructions, and maintenance schedules.
  • Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond calmly in emergency situations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with guests, vendors, and team members.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision during overnight shifts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and preventive maintenance.
  • Basic computer skills for work orders, logs, email communication, and maintenance tracking systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in guest and team member interactions.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse workplace and guest environment.

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • Technical, vocational, trade school, or maintenance-related training is a plus.

EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Minimum one (1) year of maintenance, facilities, engineering, construction, or related experience.

Preferred

  • Previous hotel maintenance or hospitality engineering experience.
  • Experience working with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems.
  • Experience utilizing preventive maintenance programs and work order systems.
  • Experience working independently during overnight operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment includes guestrooms, public spaces, mechanical rooms, rooftops, storage areas, loading areas, and exterior hotel grounds. The position regularly encounters varying temperatures, moving mechanical equipment, cleaning chemicals, and moderate noise levels.

This position primarily works overnight hours and may occasionally be exposed to emergency situations requiring immediate response.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequently stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently traverse all areas of the hotel property, including guestrooms, public spaces, stairwells, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and exterior areas.
  • Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb stairs, and safely work from ladders and elevated platforms.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally move heavier items with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Occasionally move, position, or assist with equipment and materials exceeding 50 pounds using team assistance, mechanical aids, or other appropriate safety measures.
  • Operate maintenance tools, power equipment, and hand tools safely.
  • Visually inspect guestrooms, equipment, building systems, and maintenance work for quality and safety purposes.
  • Work in both indoor and outdoor environments and in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
