About the team

You will join the R&D Mechanical Design Engineering team based in Munich, working alongside multidisciplinary teams of electrical, systems, and software engineers. The team is responsible for end-to-end mechanical development of state-of-the-art unmanned systems and counter-UAS technologies from initial concept through CAD modeling, prototyping, and qualification testing. In this role, you will collaborate closely with senior mechanical engineers and project leaders in a fast-paced, hands-on R&D workshop environment. Your mission

As a Jr. Mechanical Design Engineer, you will own the detailed CAD modeling, 2D drafting, and rapid prototyping of structural and mechanical components for our unmanned aerial systems and C-UAS platforms. You will work on integrating propulsion systems, mechanisms, ground support equipment, and electronic hardware while ensuring adherence to aerospace design standards and manufacturing guidelines. Your work directly enables rapid iteration, physical testing, and seamless transition from digital mock-ups to production-ready hardware.

Responsibilities

• Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings for structural and mechanical components using SolidWorks.

• Design mechanical interfaces, brackets, and custom enclosures for electronic hardware, propulsion units, and sensor payloads.

• Develop physical dummy models and test fixtures to support hardware-in-the-loop and integration testing.

• Conduct initial tolerance stack-up analyses, fit-check assessments, and basic stress hand calculations for structural assemblies.

• Collaborate with procurement and external manufacturing partners to deliver machined, sheet metal, and 3D-printed parts on schedule.

• Own and manage the Engineering Bill of Materials (EBOM) for mechanical assemblies and ensure accurate component tracking.

• Support Digital Mock-Up (DMU) management, including center of gravity (CoG) estimations and EBOM updates.

• Participate in design reviews (PDR/CDR) and assist in documenting minutes of meetings, open points, and failure mode analyses (FMEA).

• Assist in hands-on assembly, integration, and laboratory testing of mechanical subsystems at our Munich facility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• 1–2 years of practical experience (or relevant internship/project experience) in mechanical design and CAD modeling (SolidWorks, CATIA, or Siemens NX).

• Sound knowledge of mechanical design principles, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and material selection.

• Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and basic workshop tools.

• Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, hands-on approach to engineering challenges.

• Professional fluency in English (written and spoken); German proficiency is a plus.

Nice to have

• Experience in the aerospace, defense, or unmanned autonomous systems (UAS/drone) industries.

• Familiarity with composite materials design, lay-up techniques, and structural manufacturing processes.

• Experience with structural stress analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., Ansys, Nastran, or SolidWorks Simulation).

• Knowledge of PLM/PDM systems, EBOM structures, and document management.
