Job Summary:
The Maintenance Supervisor will lead a skilled team of technicians and maintenance planner responsible for maintaining and optimizing the 250 Schilling Prepared Plated Media automated manufacturing systems. The Maintenance Supervisor will oversee day-to-day maintenance operations, ensure equipment reliability, and drive continuous improvement to meet production goals for Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
This is a hands-on leadership role—ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, highly automated environment and enjoys solving complex mechanical and electrical challenges.
Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)
Supervise a team of maintenance technicians across multiple production shifts, ensuring high levels of performance, engagement, and safety.
Participate in the purchase and installation, start-up and validation of new equipment and/or processes as required to meet product specifications, requirements and manufacturing expectations.
Maximize equipment uptime by monitoring performance, prioritizing repairs, and allocating resources effectively.
Provide technical leadership in diagnosing and troubleshooting automated systems including linear motion, pneumatics, hydraulics, vacuum systems, robotics, vision systems, labelers, and conveyors.
Support technicians during equipment breakdowns by assisting with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and complex problem solving.
Perform breakdown maintenance duties as required to relieve technicians during extended downtime or as required due to staffing shortages.
Develop, maintain, and improve total productive maintenance (TPM) programs to ensure consistent equipment reliability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Collaborate and support operations in developing the autonomous maintenance (AM) program.
Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Engineering to resolve recurring equipment issues and implement long-term reliability improvements.
Utilize PLC systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens) to interpret ladder logic, analyze alarms, and assist in controls troubleshooting.
Manage spare parts inventory, vendor relationships, and maintenance documentation.
Lead identification of component obsolescence and collaborate with engineering to upgrade.
Collaborate with operations to plan preventative maintenance activities.
Identify training needs and mentor technicians to develop their technical and leadership capabilities.
Ensure all activities comply with BD’s safety, environmental, and quality standards as well as FDA and ISO regulations.
Education and Experience:
Associate degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related technical field.
5+ years of experience in equipment maintenance or automation within a manufacturing environment.
2+ years in a leadership or supervisory capacity preferred.
Experience in regulated industries such as medical device, pharmaceutical, or food manufacturing is highly desirable.
Demonstrated success in team leadership, maintenance planning, and total productive maintenance processes.
Knowledge and Skills:
Strong leadership skills
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
Strong communication skills with the ability to lead.
Strong knowledge of automated equipment, electrical schematics, and PLC troubleshooting.
Strong knowledge of total productive maintenance.
Proficient in CMMS or digital maintenance tracking systems.
Organized, analytical, and proactive—able to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic production setting.
Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Physical Demands:
Heavy lifting and maneuvering of over 100 lbs.
Standing, bending, kneeling, sitting, climbing, walking and carrying for extended periods.
Precise manipulation of objects using fingers, hands, wrist and shoulders.
Ability to gown and work in ISO Class 6 cleanroom environment.
Work Environment:
Use of required PPE including safety glasses, shoes, and hearing protection.
