OR Assistant/Equipment Specialist

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40

Work Shift: Morning transporter - Monday through Friday 5:45am to 2:15pm. No call and no weekends.

Summary of the Job:
Responsible for assisting with the maintenance, education, & use of surgical equipment used in the OR. Has knowledge of manufactures’ manuals and IFU (information for use) to assist with education, positioning, and the movement of patients to ensure patient and staff safety. Assists with patient positioning before, during, and/or after the procedure and during the skin prep. Demonstrates and coordinates training on the correct operation of equipment to clinical personnel in collaboration with the surgical leaders and clinical educator.  Confirms the correct equipment is assigned and ready for the appropriate OR and case/procedure.  Additional responsibilities include patient transporting, equipment transport, environmental cleaning, and equipment inventory. Responds to the demands of the OR and functions in the OR under the direction of the RN.  Is knowledgeable about AORN principles and practices. Considered an essential member during emergency conditions.

Minimum Qualifications: 

High school graduate or equivalent.  Hospital experience required. Current BLS certification through any International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) provided courses such as but not limited to:  Ochsner Health System, American Heart Association, and American Red Cross.  The ILCOR course must include a manikin check off.  Must be customer service oriented and can maintain a positive and professional attitude in all aspects of job duties related to this position. Must be attentive to the needs of others and able to pay attention to details. Possession of excellent communication skills while assisting staff. Proven ability to logically analyze problems and effect quality solutions. Must be able to complete assigned projects by scheduled deadlines e.g. equipment needs. Must be flexible in work schedule. Must participate in an “On Call” rotation if needed. Must be willing to accept and learn about new equipment applications and accept new procedures as determined. Collaborates with Biomed and Information Technology for Equipment Management. Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: OR experience preferred.

Physical Demands:     
Must possess good physical health.  Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time.  Lifting at least 50 pounds is required.  
Physical Effort required:        
Constant (67%-100%) – pushing/pulling, talking, hearing, seeing
Frequently (34%-66%) – lifting, carrying, stooping, reaching, handling/feeling
Occasionally (1%-33%)– balancing, crouching, crawling
