Responsibilities
- Develop high-performing websites and web applications with a focus on WordPress, including building and implementing backend (APIs, databases) and front-end (interfaces, web-based tools) solutions while utilizing project management tools and collaborating with colleagues, including project managers, writers, and designers.
- Review, build, and optimize functionality, performance, accessibility, scalability, and security of Purdue for Life Foundation websites and web applications. Coordinate with Purdue University IT when applicable.
- Develop data structures, web tools, and programs while taking into consideration multi-browser and mobile compatibility and performance.
- Document website and web application development efforts (such as changes, new functionality, and issue/problem resolution).
- Test website and web application performance and functionality, perform quality assurance checks, and fix bugs accordingly.
- Ensure that all protocols used in the development and maintenance of websites are up to date and compliant with university policies and standards.
- Research and stay up to date on new industry web standards, emerging media technology, UX/UI design/philosophy, and accessibility standards.
- In partnership with the design team, provide creative design solutions that enhance the visual experience for users, taking into consideration varying presentation formats (mobile vs. desktop) and university brand guidelines.
- Analyze and report on website performance metrics, and perform user testing and usage analysis.
- Identify and apply updates, upgrades, and patches, and perform testing to ensure website effectiveness and usability.
- Where applicable, incorporate AI tools to streamline workflows and enhance marketing efforts.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Proficiency in developing websites and web applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with experience using common JavaScript frameworks and libraries
- Strong understanding of Windows-based environments and experience with secure remote access and file transfer using tools and protocols such as SecureFX/SecureCRT, WinSCP, Cyberduck, OpenSSH, SSH, SFTP, and SCP
- Experience working with proprietary web-development tools, such as Adobe Dreamweaver
- Experience with server-side web frameworks, such as Python, Ruby, or PHP
- Experience with database systems, such as MySQL or Oracle
- Experience using Google Analytics to analyze website performance, identify trends and opportunities, and communicate actionable insights
- Experience working and collaborating in a project-management tool, such as Lytho or Workfront
- Ability to develop and integrate APIs and third-party services
- Familiarity with source control management, such as Git/GitHub
- Ability to apply visual-design and user-experience principles to websites and web applications
- Proficiency with graphics and image-design tools
- Ability to incorporate web accessibility, usability, and responsive design best practices in accordance with applicable policies and standards
- Ability to contribute to file repositories and communicate with colleagues to ensure project success
- Ability to audit and perform updates to developed code systems and projects
- Basic knowledge of IT infrastructure, network services, and cloud computing
- Experience with content-management systems, such as WordPress, Sitecore, or Cascade
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Project-management and prioritization skills as well as dependability and flexibility to work in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment
- Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies, tools, and development practices
- Proficient in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe XD preferred
Required Education, Experience and Benefits Summary
- Bachelor’s degree required; prefer concentration in computer science or related field.
- A minimum of three years of full-stack web development or related experience.
- Experience in higher education setting preferred.
