Summary
**As Providence Health Care prepares for the opening of the New St. Paul's Hospital, some aspects of this position may evolve during the transition period. While the overall nature of the role is expected to remain substantially the same, operational requirements may result in adjustments to scheduling, FTE, unit assignment, site or other operational details.**
JOB SUMMARY:Reporting to the Coordinator, Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR), the position works as a member of an integrated team within a fast paced, a high volume medical device reprocessing environment and assists in ensuring that the overall equipment/supply requirements are met. Primary duties include maintaining efficient workflow and providing work direction to Medical Device Reprocessing Technicians as required as well as assisting with decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, wrapping, sterilizing and distributing simple and complex instruments, equipment and linen related to the operating rooms and other areas of the hospital. Duties also include assisting the MDR team leadership with the establishment and maintenance of computerized inventory databases, assisting with the introduction/documentation of new/trial instrumentation into the system, borrowing/loaning of specific equipment and the repair/servicing of equipment, creating statistical and analytical reports, liaising with vendors, expediting deliveries, and receiving/distributing goods.QUALIFICATIONS:EducationGrade 12, successful completion of a recognized Medical Device Reprocessing course, plus two (2) years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of surgical and medical terminology.Mathematical aptitude.Ability to supervise.Ability to keyboard.Ability to communicate and deal effectively with others.Ability to operate related equipment.Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.Ability to organize work.Provides work direction to medical device reprocessing technicians, as required, by performing duties such as assessing and prioritizing workload, monitoring breaks, and redirecting staff to other areas to meet operational requirements; ensures standards, procedures and safety protocols are adhered to, corrects as required, and refers problems to supervisor/charge nurse (e.g., Coordinator, MDR RN). Calls in relief staff, in the absence of the Coordinator/MDR RN, in accordance with established procedures for various shifts, such as evenings, nights, weekend and statutory holidays and by referring to established guidelines.Assists MDR team leadership by troubleshooting equipment or instrumentation concerns from the user areas (i.e., OR, wards, Stores) such as back orders of stores supplies, locating missing items, and ordering depleted items from the Central Warehouse.Obtains information from companies (i.e., manufacturers) such as instructions on equipment and instrument sets (including loaner sets), photographing new items, drafting new and/or revising procedures including writing product user information and removing obsolete items and adding new items. Notifies appropriate personnel of all additions/changes/deletions to inventory catalogue/manual as they are made and distributes material as appropriate.Checks O.R. slates with OR pick lists to ensure the pick list matches the slated case ID number (e.g., IA, 1B), procedure code and physician name. Ensures the special requests in the comments section are transferred to the pick lists and that these requested items are available. Ensures loaner instruments are ready for next appropriate slated case(s).Maintains accurate records of instruments (including loaner instrument sets) and equipment loaned to wards, clinics, other hospitals, and operating rooms by ensuring applicable forms and/or records are completed according to established procedures.Participates in the orientation of new staff member by working alongside and/or demonstrating techniques as required.Fills orders for equipment, supplies and operating room slates according to requests by gathering requested items, initialling form to indicate request has been filled and placed on either a case cart or in dispatch area.Ensures sterilizers are operating according to manufacturer's specifications by having a working knowledge of the specifications and ensuring the correct results. Conducts routine testing by utilizing standard test procedures such as air detection and biological indicators to monitor the efficiency of the sterilizer; advises the supervisor of any discrepancies with the routine test results. Maintains records of tests performed to comply with quality assurance standards.Sorts, inspects, and reassembles operating room instrument sets and procedure trays by receiving decontaminated items, sorting each item according to pre-determined set/tray, and reassembling sets/trays/ following procedure manuals to ensure accuracy.Prepares medical devices, (e.g., instrument sets, procedure trays, and supplies) for sterilization by methods such as gathering necessary items, wrapping in disposable wrap, packaging in appropriate pouch, or placing in rigid sterilization container system as outlined in the procedure manuals.Assists technicians, as needed, by performing decontamination functions for reusable supplies and equipment such as patient care items and surgical instruments by checking returned items for sharps, pre-washing as required, loading on manifolds and processing manifolds through the washers; cleans non-immersible devices by hand washing utilizing appropriate cleaning products.Maintains a safe and organized work environment by ensuring that routine cleaning and tidying of work and storage areas is completed according to established guidelines, including cleaning bins, carts, storage drawers, and decontamination area and replacing supplies/equipment in designated places.Checks MDR supplies to ensure rotation of items and integrity of packaging; removes and replaces items as required.Receives and distributes goods as needed, by unpacking items, checking goods are delivered as per specifications, and placing articles in appropriate areas.Operates equipment such as mechanical washers and sterilizers according to standard operating procedures and replenishes supplies such as disinfectants as required; checks printed reports to ensure equipment is working within defined parameters and reports discrepancies to supervisor.Performs related clerical duties such as answering telephones, message taking, and maintaining records by completing forms and filing, responding to enquiries from various departments such as wards or Stores, typing a variety of technical and non-technical material using word processing.Performs other related duties as assigned.
