Boulder County Coroner's Office is seeking to hire a Coroner Transport Specialist Full-TimeThe Boulder County Coroner’s Office Transport Specialist duties will consist of decedent transportation and logistics while also aiding operations division team members with daily operations. The Coroner Transport Specialist is responsible for transportation of decedents(Fleet vehicles are provided for transporting deceased persons), coordinating logistics, and providing daily operations support for the Coroner’s Office, Operations Division. This position performs a variety of administrative forensic and analytical duties in the field of death investigation. This classification performs technical, physically demanding forensic work supporting the Boulder County Coroner’s Office which will be performed during overnight hours, weekends, and holidays in a variety of field settings within Boulder County. This is both physically and emotionally demanding work that requires employees to occasionally assist in raising or lowering objects with a minimum of 150 pounds.

This is a full-time, benefited position that will work evenings, nights, and weekends with possible overtime and dependent on the calls-for-service. This position will work out of 5610 Flatiron Pkwy, Boulder, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime). 

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $52,008.00 - $57,886.40 Annually

Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • Phone Screening: Week of September 7th
  • First Round Interviews: Week of September 14th
  • Second Round Interviews and Polygraph: Week of September 14th
  • Physical Skills Assessment: Week of September 14th
  • Reference Check: Week of September 21st

New employees receive an 80-hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month (Must not have been employed at Boulder County during the 12 months prior to re-hire date to qualify).   1. Operate a fleet vehicle while responding to scene locations to recover and prepare decedents for transport to the coroner’s office; pick-up and delivery of specimens, and/or records from laboratories, hospitals, care centers and physician offices
  2. Assists in the maintenance of fleet vehicles for daily operations including the overall cleanliness of the vehicle while monitoring supplies and equipment
  3. Intake and process decedents into the custody of the coroner’s office; collects and preserves physical and medical evidence
  4. Physically lifts, moves, and loads bodies including infants, children, and decedents that may be fragmented, burned and/or or in advanced stages of decomposition
  5. Collect fingerprints for identification purposes
  6. Performs limited scope diagnostic imaging (x-ray) for identification, documentation of trauma, and evidence location and collection
  7. Performs limited photography of decedents and death scenes
  8. Collect, inventory, document, and protect the integrity of evidence and personal effects via chain of custody
  9. Assist in the release of decedents to authorized parties
  10. Performs a variety of case-related data entry via case management system
  11. Assist with emergency preparedness and mass fatality
  12. May be required to be ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies
  13. Performs related work, as required
  14. May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

DRIVER'S LICENSE & RELIABLE VEHICLE:

BACKGROUND CHECK & FINGERPRINTING:

  • A job offer is contingent on passing a background investigation with fingerprinting

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Applicants must pass a pre-employment polygraph examination
  • Applicants must be able to work days, nights, graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays and maintain on-call availability
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
  • Applicants invited to an interview will be required to bring a non-certified Colorado full driver record (Colorado DMV allows individuals to access their driving history record Motor Vehicle Record; the cost is $9.00 to the individual)

PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT:

  • Candidates for this position will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical assessment which includes completing a basic person lift to gurney, and transport vehicle gurney loading and unloading using a mannequin

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
    1. Additional compensation will be provided based on the use of bilingual skills.
  • 2 years of experience in a service-related industry involving the transportation of individuals in a medical, law enforcement, or funeral service capacity
  • Experience working in highly stressful situations and environments while also demonstrating professionalism and calmness

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to provide dignity and respect while caring for deceased persons in stressful situations and environments
  • Excellent customer service skills, along with initiative, empathy, attention to detail, flexibility, and patience
  • Knowledge of the use of materials, equipment, hazards, safety precautions and procedures necessary for transport of decedents and processing of evidence
  • Ability to work in high stress situations
  • Knowledge of bio-medical hazards, blood borne pathogens and precautions
  • Customer service skills to include empathy, respect, flexibility, and patience
  • Attention to detail skills and ability to accurately maintain and record information
  • Skill in the use of computers and related software applications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently lowers or lifts a minimum of 150 lbs.
  • Occasionally pushes and pulls items weighing a minimum of 150 lbs.
  • Frequently bends at waist, squats, and kneels
  • This includes foot travel which can require hiking up/down mountains, climbing up/down waterway embankments, navigating scorched terrain – all while packing in and out equipment
  • May navigate narrow spaces, stairs, driveways, etc.
