Software Engineer – Corporate Affairs Digital Platforms
Role Profile / Job Description
Role Purpose
The Software Engineer is responsible for designing, building, testing, deploying and supporting high-quality digital platform capabilities across Corporate Affairs digital products and services. The role contributes to secure, scalable and maintainable solutions that support global web, content, brand, campaign and operational support capabilities.
Working with Technical Delivery Leads, Product Managers, architects, QA, operations and supplier teams, the role turns prioritised requirements into reliable software. It follows modern engineering practices across coding, testing, automation, DevOps, observability and operational support, helping ensure platforms remain resilient, secure, efficient and easy to evolve.

Supports Corporate Affairs digital platforms and services, including Brand Portal, global web, content, campaign, analytics and operational support capabilities.
Engineering scope
Builds and supports front-end, back-end, integration, automation, testing and DevOps capabilities depending on platform needs and team structure.

Works within Agile delivery teams, contributing to refinement, estimation, development, testing, release and operational improvement activities.
Operational ownership
Supports a “you build it, you run it” mindset through monitoring, observability, incident support, problem solving and continuous improvement.

Contributes to secure, accessible, performant, maintainable and production-ready software aligned to engineering standards and platform governance.
Key Responsibilities
Software Design & Development
- Design, build and maintain digital platform capabilities, components, services, APIs, integrations and automation solutions.
- Write clean, maintainable, secure and well-tested code aligned to agreed engineering standards and coding practices.
- Contribute to technical design, solution options, code reviews and implementation feasibility assessments.
- Support platform modernisation, re-use of shared patterns, reduction of technical debt and simplification of legacy capabilities.
- Develop solutions that are scalable, accessible, performant and supportable across global and multi-market use cases.
Agile Delivery & Product Contribution
- Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, estimation, demos, retrospectives and delivery reviews.
- Work with Product Managers and Technical Delivery Leads to understand business outcomes, user needs and prioritised requirements.
- Break down technical work into clear tasks and contribute to user stories, acceptance criteria and delivery planning.
- Identify assumptions, dependencies, blockers and risks early, increasing with options and recommendations where needed.
- Contribute to delivery transparency through clear updates, documentation and use of delivery management tools.
Testing, Quality & Release Engineering
- Build and maintain unit, integration, component and automated tests to support reliable software delivery.
- Support regression testing, accessibility checks, performance validation and production readiness activities.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, release automation, deployment processes and environment management.
- Perform code reviews and use static analysis, quality gates and peer feedback to improve engineering quality.
- Support safe release practices, rollback planning and post-release verification.
Platform Operations & DevOps
- Support operational reliability through monitoring, observability, logging, alerting and service health improvements.
- Investigate and resolve incidents, defects and platform issues, working with support, supplier and infrastructure teams as required.
- Contribute to runbooks, knowledge articles, support documentation and handover materials.
- Support automation of manual operational processes to improve efficiency, reduce risk and increase delivery speed.
- Help ensure services meet non-functional requirements for resilience, availability, security, privacy and maintainability.
Collaboration & Engineering Culture
- Collaborate effectively with architects, QA, operations, security, privacy, analytics, suppliers and business customers.
- Share knowledge, document solutions and support capability building across bp and supplier engineering teams.
- Apply a product attitude by considering user value, business impact, long-term operability and platform consistency.
- Adopt AI-assisted engineering and automation tools where appropriate and governed, improving productivity and quality.
- Promote continuous improvement, curiosity, engineering field and accountability across the team.
Skills & Experience
- Experience building and supporting digital products, web platforms, CMS-backed services, APIs, integrations or cloud-native applications.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including code quality, testing, maintainability, design patterns, security and performance awareness.
- Experience with modern development practices, Agile delivery, version control, CI/CD, automated testing and DevOps ways of working.
- Ability to work with requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria, translating business needs into robust technical outcomes.
- Good understanding of operational readiness, monitoring, logging, incident support and production service ownership.
- Experience working with suppliers, distributed teams and cross-functional stakeholders in enterprise technology environments.
- Desirable experience with Contentful, MACH architecture, headless CMS, React or modern front-end frameworks, Java/API development, AWS, Azure DevOps, Git, automation or AI-assisted development.

- Reduction of manual effort, technical debt and operational risk through automation, simplification and engineering improvements.
- Strong collaboration with product, delivery, architecture, QA, operations and supplier teams.
- Successful transition of changes into production and BAU support with clear ownership and support documentation.
