Description

Benefis is one of Montana’s largest and premier health systems, and we are committed to providing excellent care for all, healing body, mind, and spirit. At Benefis, we work hard to support our employees in every aspect of their careers by offering outstanding benefits and compensation, state-of-the-art facilities, and multiple growth opportunities. The only thing missing is you!

The Benefis Apprenticeship Program is part of Montana's 406 Jobs initiative, which aims to address a shortage of people stepping into critical healthcare roles. Apprentices take online classes through an accredited program and also work at Benefis in the field. The state program provides oversight and accountability for Benefis and for the student, and Benefis offers tuition reimbursement options. Over this 16 month program Surgical Technician Apprentices will have an experiential learning environment combining on the job training with related technical instruction. Apprentices finish the program fully certified as a Tech in Surgery TS-C (NCCT)

A Surgical Technologist (Surgical Tech) is a healthcare professional who helps prepare for and assist during surgical procedures. Surgical techs are key members of the operating room team, working closely with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists to ensure procedures are performed safely and efficiently.

Surgical technologists play a vital role in the operating room. Their responsibilities include setting up surgical trays and supplies, verifying that necessary equipment and implants are available, helping position patients for surgery, and maintaining a sterile field throughout the procedure. During surgery, they anticipate the surgeon’s needs by passing instruments and supplies, monitoring surgical instruments, sponges, and other materials to ensure nothing is left inside the patient, and assisting with tasks such as retracting tissue or holding instruments when appropriate.

To become a successful surgical technologist, individuals should be detail-oriented and comfortable standing for long periods of time. The role can be physically and mentally demanding, as surgical techs often assist with urgent or complex procedures that may require extended hours. Strong communication skills, the ability to work effectively as part of a team, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure are essential qualities for success in this profession.

Many surgical technologists describe their careers as highly gratifying because they play a direct role in patient care during important, and often life-changing, surgical procedures. Their contributions help ensure positive patient outcomes and support the success of the entire surgical team.
