New Graduate Nurse- Surgical

Job Description:

A former nursing student who has completed an accredited nursing program and is pending nursing
licensure. All individuals hired into this position are expected to obtain nursing licensure within six (6)
months of hire and transition into a new graduate nurse resident position, as available, for the next
available nurse residency cohort after licensure. If a Graduate Nurse does not obtain nursing licensure
within six (6) months of hire, an extension of employment in this position requires the approval of the hospital CNO.

Works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) except as noted in addendum.

Essential Functions

• Responds to patient care needs by answering call lights, assisting with hygiene and nutritional needs, obtaining vital signs, and communicating effectively and timely with members of the care team.
• Performs clinical skills and tasks within defined competencies, including the insertion, maintenance, and removal of peripheral IVs (PIVs), Foley catheters, and nasogastric tubes; venipuncture; safe wound care; and the collection and documentation of vital signs, glucose levels, intake, and output.
• Performs secondary assessments to supplement the primary assessment completed by the Registered Nurse (RN).
• Provides patient and family education regarding disease processes, medications, treatments, and the plan of care.
• May administer medications under the direct supervision of an RN with required dual sign-off.
• Documents patient care with RN review and co-signature, as required.
• Assists nurses and physicians within established scope of practice and demonstrated competencies.
• Actively contributes to achieving patient experience and quality care goals.
• Assists with patient transfers, admissions, and discharges in accordance with safe patient handling practices.
• Demonstrates and adheres to infection prevention standards and may float to other departments or participate in on-call coverage based on qualifications and business needs.

Minimum Qualifications

• An unlicensed graduate of an accredited BSN or ADN program having completed all necessary clinical coursework.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval.

Preferred Qualifications

• One (1+) years of previous experience in a health care setting.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
• For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$26.50 - $26.50
