Fire Technician (FT)

The Fire Technician serves as a member of the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department staff, responsible for responding to emergencies and protecting life and property through effective firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical services. This position also supports inspection, prevention, and training functions as well as assisting with apparatus and facility maintenance, and logistical tasks as needed.

This position operates under the direct supervision of a Battalion Chief as assigned and is expected to work independently while upholding department standards and policies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Operations, services, and activities of the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department (ACFD).
• Principles, practices, and methods of comprehensive fire suppression and other emergency services.

Ability to:

• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Must clearly speak the English language, as well as have full comprehension of the English language.
• Interpret instructions and use logic to solve concrete problems and effectively provide instruction to groups of varying sizes and ages. 
• Read firefighting, fire protection, and leadership textbooks, apparatus and equipment service manuals, first responder medical textbooks, and hazardous materials emergency response textbooks.
• Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division necessary for response to fire, rescue, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials incidents.
• Work as a member of a team and when directed lead the team under stress caused by emergencies, danger, or criticism.   Make reasonable decisions regarding the safety of team members and his/her own self.  Work under limited supervision in stressful situations.   Prioritize work assignments.
• Present a positive, constructive image and attitude in the performance of all duties.  Establish positive working relationships with the public, City staff, fire personnel, and other agencies.
• Operate equipment, which includes but is not limited to hand tools, power tools, light and heavy equipment, fire pumps, aerial ladders, and boats.  Operate all fire department vehicles including cars and fire apparatus.
• Operate computers using common word processing, spreadsheet, and database software, as well as audio-visual equipment, including digital cameras, video cameras and recording equipment, and various types of projection equipment.
• Perform all physical duties normally expected of a firefighter.  Shall meet minimum medical requirements as established by the fire department physician and shall comply with OSHA respirator requirements on an annual basis.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience that would likely provide the required knowledge is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Three years of progressively responsible experience in the Fire Service.
• Current MN Firefighter License or the ability to obtain upon hire.
• Certification at the Emergency Medical Responder level or higher.
• Minnesota State Fire Service Certifications:

- Firefighter I & II

- Haz-Mat Ops

- Fire Apparatus Operator

- NIMS 100 and 200

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department
• Emergency Medical Technician.
• Minnesota State Fire Service Certifications:
• Fire Inspector I
