Chief Investment Officer
Our client is a specialist alternative investment manager focused on delivering sustainable private credit solutions to the underbanked middle corporate market. With a strong emphasis on capital preservation, responsible investing, and long-term value creation, they provide innovative financing solutions across sectors including financial services, real estate, infrastructure, renewable energy, and other strategic investment areas.
They are seeking an accomplished and commercially astute Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to lead and oversee the organisation's investment strategy and portfolio management activities. This executive leadership role will be responsible for driving investment performance, managing investment risks, shaping investment policies, and maintaining strong relationships with investors and key stakeholders. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable growth while fostering a high-performance investment culture and upholding the highest standards of governance and ethical investment practices.
Responsibilities: Investment Strategy & Portfolio Management • Establish, implement, and ensure adherence to the organisation's investment philosophy, policies, and governance frameworks. • Lead the overall investment strategy to achieve desired investment outcomes in line with investor mandates and organisational objectives. • Provide oversight and strategic direction of the investment portfolio, including diversification strategies, portfolio quality, and investment approaches. • Ensure investment processes are efficient, well-defined, and consistently adhered to across the organisation. • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within investment processes and investment analysis capabilities. • Develop and present investment recommendations to investors and investment committees based on thorough research, analysis, and structuring. • Arrange and lead periodic investment reviews and investor reporting engagements. • Ensure regular administration and governance reviews of all investment files and documentation. Investment Structuring & Portfolio Oversight • Ensure investment transactions are optimally structured in conjunction with legal, taxation, and accounting requirements. • Assess portfolio risks and adjust investment strategies accordingly to optimise risk-adjusted returns. • Provide guidance to investment originators regarding portfolio risk and return parameters. • Attend investee meetings, review financial statements, and remain informed of material valuation, regulatory, and policy developments. • Ensure effective financial monitoring of portfolio companies and compliance with relevant regulatory requirements. • Develop clearly defined investment exit strategies for relevant asset classes. • Provide thought leadership on economic trends, private credit markets, and emerging investment themes. Business Development & Investor Relations • Partner with Business Development teams to identify new sources of capital and investment opportunities. • Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing and prospective investors and key market participants. • Provide regular feedback and reporting to investors on portfolio performance and market developments. • Engage in high-level negotiations with potential investors, clients, and service providers. • Maintain extensive networks within private credit markets, corporate sectors, advisory communities, and broader financial markets. • Support acquisition activities, including due diligence processes and transaction negotiations where required. • Act as a thought leader within the industry, promoting best practices and enhancing the organisation's market positioning.
Leadership & Team Development • Provide strategic leadership and mentorship to the investment team across investment structuring, due diligence, and post-investment management activities. • Foster a culture of high performance, employee engagement, accountability, and continuous learning. • Work closely with executive leadership to execute strategic objectives approved by the Board. • Collaborate with the CFO and other executives to strengthen internal management systems and operational effectiveness. Risk Management & Governance • Work closely with the Chief Risk Officer to identify, monitor, and manage investment risks. • Make recommendations regarding investment restructurings and workout strategies where necessary. • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and governance requirements relating to investments. • Consider liquidity, cash flow, and broader market risks when determining investment strategies and portfolio allocations. • Uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct, corporate governance, and fiduciary responsibility in all investment decisions. • Understand and mitigate key elements of the organisation's overall risk profile. Requirements: • Honours Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Law, or a related field. • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a senior management or investment leadership role, with significant deal- making experience. • Extensive experience in investment structuring, portfolio management, and investment strategy development. • Strong understanding of local and global investment markets and industry trends. • Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency. • Master's Degree in Finance or a related discipline will be advantageous. • Professional qualifications such as CA(SA), CFA, FRM, or MBA are highly desirable. • International Executive Leadership Programme participation will be advantageous.
