Role Summary
As a part-time Building and Zoning Plan Examiner, you will help protect public safety and support orderly development by reviewing construction and site plans for code and ordinance compliance. This entry-level, onsite role is based at 45175 West 10 Mile Road, Novi, MI, and pays $38 to $50 an hour.
Typical Workday
You'll start onsite by organizing incoming plan sets and prioritizing items by due date and completeness. Much of the day is spent moving between digital files and detailed drawings, capturing notes that are specific, traceable, and easy for applicants to act on. You'll pause for brief check-ins with colleagues to align on interpretation questions and keep reviews moving. Midday often includes short calls or counter conversations to clarify submittals and explain next steps in a calm, customer-centered manner. Before wrapping up, you'll finalize documentation, update tracking, and set up the next batch of reviews so projects continue progressing predictably.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing building plans, zoning submittals, and related documents for compliance with applicable codes and local ordinances
- Coordinating review comments with applicants, contractors, and internal departments to resolve deficiencies
- Documenting approvals, corrections, and conditions clearly and consistently
- Supporting permit processing and maintaining accurate records within established timelines
Required qualifications/skills:
- Required education level includes high school diploma
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license
- Building Inspector with the State of Michigan under Act 407, required.
- Five (5) years of experience in responsible work related to building construction, required.
