Duties and Responsibilities
- Administer, configure, and optimize Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, capacity planning, backup, restore, and disaster recovery.
- Design, implement, and maintain highly available and scalable database architectures using SQL Server high availability and disaster recovery technologies (e.g., Always On Availability Groups, multi-site deployments).
- Lead database performance diagnostics and tuning efforts, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and workload analysis.
- Partner with application and infrastructure teams on schema design, database standards, code reviews, and release planning.
- Develop and enhance proactive monitoring and alerting solutions to identify performance, capacity, and availability risks before impact.
- Automate routine database administration tasks using scripting and standardized operational processes (e.g., PowerShell, T-SQL).
- Manage database lifecycle activities including upgrades, patching, and migrations.
- Ensure database environments meet enterprise security, compliance, and governance requirements, including access controls and auditing.
- Support and optimize reporting and analytics workloads to ensure data accuracy, performance, and availability for business users.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation and continuously improve operational processes and runbooks.
- Research and evaluate database tools, technologies, and best practices to improve reliability and performance.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
- Participate in on-call rotations and provide off-hours support as required to maintain system availability.
Requirements
- Extensive experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise environments, including performance tuning and troubleshooting.
- Strong hands-on experience with Always On Availability Groups in multi-site environments.
- Experience implementing and managing backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies for mission-critical databases.
- Proficiency with database automation and scripting (PowerShell, T-SQL).
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Qlik, and other data presentation or reporting tools is required.
- Experience supporting and tuning reporting workloads for business intelligence and analytics use cases.
- Experience with database monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Idera SQL DM, native SQL Server monitoring).
- Solid understanding of SQL Server security best practices, including least-privilege access and auditing.
- Experience planning and executing SQL Server upgrades, patching, and migrations with minimal downtime.
- Knowledge of Python for automation, tooling, or data-related tasks is a plus.
- Highly self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks effectively in high-pressure environments.
