Description
Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn’t imagine the future, we invent it. If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!
The Software and Societal Systems (S3D) department within the School of Computer Science explores the vital intersection of the confluence of software, systems, and society to understand how computational technologies might better serve humanity. We are studying the bigger picture of computing in context in order to develop tools, policies, methods, and much more — all in the name of making the world a safer, more equitable, better place to call home.
S3D is seeking a Research Assistant to help build and expand the open-source ecosystem around a new technology for teaching geometry proof to middle- and high-school students. The technology combines a visual representation of proofs, a domain-specific language, a formally verified proof checker, and tools for generating proof content automatically. The research assistant will onboard new contributors, triage issues, write documentation, and work with content developers building on the technology. The role also includes engineering and research work, with about half of the position devoted to the ecosystem.
This is an entry-level position suitable for someone who has just completed their undergraduate degree. Some prior experience working in a university research environment as a research assistant is required, but part-time academic year work or full-time summer experience is adequate. A bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a closely related field is required. Because the position is scheduled to begin in February 2027, applicants who will complete their degree before that date (e.g., December 2026 or January 2027 graduates) are welcome to apply.
Core Responsibilities
- Onboard new open-source contributors by guiding them through environment setup, codebase orientation, and first contributions, and by answering questions in issue trackers and discussion forums.
- Triage incoming issues and pull requests by reproducing bugs, labeling and prioritizing reports, and routing them to the appropriate maintainers.
- Write and maintain documentation for the proof domain-specific language, the ENDER visual proof renderer, and the proof checker, written for audiences ranging from content developers to middle and high school teachers.
- Support content developers building on the platform, including helping them author, test, and debug proofs and use the automated proof-generation tools.
- Implement features and fix defects in the React and TypeScript rendering application, including the synchronized diagram and two-column text views.
- Contribute to the grammar and proof checker, including writing test cases for correct, incorrect, and partial proofs.
- Assist with research on proof comprehension, such as designing study materials, supporting data collection with secondary school participants under IRB protocols, and analyzing results.
Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
