Description
You've stumbled upon the rare B Corp government contractor! At TCG, we aim to prove that businesses can be good to their employees and responsible to their community while being profitable. We're an award-winning IT solutions provider to the Federal government seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our team for a service conversion project.
The ideal candidate should have strong experience in Bash scripting and Python development, with the ability to analyze existing batch processes and convert them into secure, efficient, and maintainable Python solutions. This role requires a detail-oriented, self-starting engineer who can validate functional equivalency between legacy and converted jobs while minimizing operational risk and ensuring reliable production performance.
This role is a hybrid position that requires two days of on-site work per week.
US Citizenship and the ability to pass a Federal government clearance check are required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Analyze existing Bash scripts and batch jobs to understand their business logic, dependencies, inputs, outputs, execution schedules, and error-handling behavior
- Rewrite Bash-based jobs in Python while preserving existing functionality, processing logic, and expected results
- Refactor and optimize converted scripts to improve code-reuse, execution efficiency, readability, system reliability, maintainability, and resource utilization
- Apply Python development best practices, including modular design, reusable components, robust exception handling, logging, configuration management, and secure coding practices
- Identify and resolve compatibility issues, technical dependencies, and operational risks associated with migrating legacy batch processes
- Develop and maintain an isolated test environment that supports the development, execution, and validation of converted jobs without adversely affecting production systems
- Create, execute, and document test cases to verify the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of converted batch jobs
- Compare the outputs and execution behavior of Python implementations against their Bash-based counterparts to demonstrate functional equivalency and identify discrepancies
- Test normal processing, boundary conditions, error scenarios, and recovery behavior to ensure converted jobs perform reliably under expected operating conditions
- Document conversion activities, technical decisions, test results, known limitations, and operational procedures to support ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting
- Identify and remediate software defects, investigate errors through log analysis and debugging, and implement corrective actions as needed
- Follow applicable environment security requirements and industry best practices, including secure handling of credentials, sensitive data, file permissions, and system interactions
- Provide production support for assigned systems and batch services, including investigating failures, resolving incidents, and implementing fixes as needed
- Collaborate with project team members, technical stakeholders, and end users to clarify requirements, evaluate proposed solutions, and ensure converted services meet operational needs
- Participate in project meetings, provide progress updates, communicate technical risks and dependencies, and identify issues that may affect project delivery
- Stay current with Python development practices, scripting technologies, security standards, and automation techniques relevant to the project
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- A minimum of seven years of professional experience in software development, scripting, or a related technical role
- Demonstrated experience with the Linux/Unix environments, Bash shell scripting and Python development
- Understands how to troubleshoot network connectivity and authentication issues in a secure
environment and can work with infrastructure staff to address them
- Experience analyzing existing code, troubleshooting issues, and translating business logic into maintainable software solutions
- Experience developing and executing test cases to validate software functionality, accuracy, and reliability
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including experience analyzing logs and identifying root causes of technical issues
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing tasks, and contribute effectively with minimal supervision
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical documentation
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Familiarity with automated batch processing and job scheduling
- Has a background in implementing customer facing applications and uses good judgement in regards to usability when implementing customer facing features
- Understands and can implement systems using CAS and/or certificate based authentication
- Experience with automated testing tools, Git, and continuous integration practices
- Knowledge of secure coding practices and web application security, including the OWASP
- Familiarity with Atlassian products including Jira and Confluence and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins
