Job Title: Senior Technician - Gas Measurement & Instrumentation
Locations: Binghamton, NY or Horseheads, NY
Salary Range: $96,400 - $120,500
Schedule: Office - On Site
Job Summary
The Senior Technician - Gas Measurement & Instrumentation is responsible for witnessing the testing of gas measurement equipment at purchase points, collecting and analyzing gas quality samples and performing the installation, calibration, and maintenance of gas measurement equipment.
The role supports gas operations, gas control; and regulatory compliance by ensuring all instrumentation meets required standards and is properly documented.
This position performs technical work related to gas detection, pressure monitoring, and air quality instrumentation, while also supporting natural gas chemistry analysis and emergency response activities. The technician regularly interacts with internal teams, external vendors, and regulatory agencies including the New York State Department of Public Service.
Strong organizational skills, technical aptitude, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-demand environment are critical for success.
Travel is expected within NYSEG service territory as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Instrumentation & Calibration
- Perform calibration, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on gas detection, odor detection, pressure, and air monitoring equipment. Maintain and operate calibration equipment and associated gases. Ensure all instruments meet compliance and operational standards.
- Equipment Tracking & Vendor Coordination
- Manage lifecycle of equipment sent for external calibration and repair. Maintain “out of service” logs and records. Track returned equipment and update systems accordingly.
- Communicate status with internal departments. Obtain vendor quotes and coordinate replacement of non-repairable equipment.
- Compliance, Systems & Documentation
- Maintain accurate calibration and compliance records using specialized software systems (Fluke Met/Team, GD Cloud, Sensit SCAL360 platform, and Microsoft Office).
- Ensure data integrity for regulatory audits and reporting. Prepare documentation required for compliance with the New York State Department of Public Service.
- Gas Chemistry & Laboratory Support
- Perform natural gas sampling and analysis on scheduled and emergency basis across all NYSEG Divisions & RG&E. Conduct data entry, evaluation, and trending of gas composition data. Prepare, review, and distribute technical reports. Support QA/QC analysis including graphing and evaluation.
- Emergency Response
- Able to respond to emergency events, to collect and analyze field samples during emergency situations and provide timely reporting and communication to stakeholders.
- Communication & Coordination
- Collaborate with internal departments and Gas Operations teams. Communicate effectively with regulatory agencies and external partners. Provide technical support and guidance related to instrumentation and data.
- Work Environment & Expectations
- Manage multiple tasks and respond to high-priority requests in a fast-paced setting. Demonstrate strong prioritization and problem-solving skills.
Required Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree with 5+ years of experience, or High School Diploma/GED with 7+ years of experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Knowledge
- Knowledge of gas detection equipment, pressure instrumentation, and calibration techniques. Understanding of natural gas distribution systems, safety practices, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant experience in gas operations, instrumentation, or technical services preferred.
- Background in calibration, measurement systems, or laboratory analysis is desirable.
