Tractor Mechanic

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Shop Manager, the Light Tractor Technician is responsible for inspection, repair, and preventative maintenance of the various types of Warren tractors by using Warren and industry-standard methods and criteria to ensure the tractor is safe to be on the road. Functions of this position include inspecting, diagnosing, replacing, and repairing brake systems, ABS, electrical components, multi-axle alignments, hydraulic systems, welding/fabrication of steel and aluminum, and related equipment.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform CES inspections on equipment as needed
• Perform light tractor repairs, including but not limited to replacement of brakes, tires, and filters  
• Address driver issues found during prelease inspections
• LYTX camera installation and repair
• IVG installation

• Perform inspections on incoming (safety lane) and outgoing company-owned trailers using company, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently
• Adheres to CTPAT compliance
• Move tractor and trailer in and out of the shop for maintenance repairs
• Inspect electrical wiring, following wiring diagrams and color codes, examine welded and painted surfaces for flaws, reporting any damages to the Foreman
• Confirm assembled unit inspection to determine that undercarriage, braking systems, wheels, tires, and latching support meet specifications and record items examined and defects found
• Perform repairs following Warren procedures within standard job times to ensure the equipment is available when needed and to get the driver back on the road as soon as possible
• Performs basic trailer maintenance including proper condition and tire air pressure, brakes, lights, and safety equipment, and submits reports indicating the condition of equipment
• Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times, ensure established safety procedures are implemented and followed
• Must meet productivity standards
• Document all parts used on trucks and trailers, returning completed paperwork to the foreman to be added to the work order
• Required to work occasional overtime and other shift vacancies as needed
• Perform shop clean-up and housekeeping responsibilities and other miscellaneous related duties as assigned

 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Two-year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/or a minimum of three years of equivalent experience in a related field, e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, tire repair, etc., and experience in cutting and welding
• Working knowledge of DOT regulations and out-of-service parameters for tractors, trailers, and accessorial equipment
• Working knowledge of trailer maintenance and diagnostic software
• A valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred
• Must be able to operate all related shop equipment
• Strong communication skills (written, verbal, listening)
• Basic computer skills
• Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training
• Working knowledge of proper procedures for hauling and disposal of hazardous waste materials

This is a physically demanding position.

• Standing for eight or more hours
• Lifting parts weighing in excess of 70 pounds several times during each shift and use hoist and test equipment as needed
• Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and feeling
• Use of hand and power tools
• Frequent exposure to noise, vibration, dust, exhaust fumes, and other hazardous and non-hazardous materials
• Road testing of vehicles may be required
• This position may be exposed to all weather elements and conditions
• This position is safety sensitive; therefore, subject to random drug testing

 

The essential functions of the role depend on in-person oversight, coaching, and real-time collaboration with management and operations staff. Remote work would remove the employee from direct supervision and eliminate the immediate coaching and escalation support that the position requires. Because these functions are essential to the role, and remote work would not allow the employee to perform them effectively, working from home is not a reasonable or effective accommodation.
