Pay Schedule II, Grade H22, 40 hours per week

Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Highways and Equipment Maintenance.

Under general supervision, performs preventative and skilled diagnostic repair and maintenance work on diesel and gasoline powered trucks weighing one ton or more, construction equipment, and hydraulic and electrical systems on vehicles and equipment.

Essential Job Duties
  • Repairs, rebuilds, and maintains gasoline powered trucks weighing one ton or more and construction equipment.
  • Assists in overhauling and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, and brakes.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged body parts.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance checks and services on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment, such as oil, filter changes and replacement of lights, belts, and mirrors.
  • Prepares metal body parts for painting.
  • Repairs tires.
  • Assists in overhauling, repairs, and rebuilds complex hydraulic systems on gasoline and diesel powered trucks and their components.
  • Diagnoses machine failures.
  • Repairs electrical systems on equipment and vehicles.
  • Welds metal parts of machinery using electric, acetylene, brazing, or cutting techniques as appropriate.
Examples of Other Duties
Road tests and otherwise operates equipment and vehicles.
May perform repairs in the field.
May operate equipment to tow disabled vehicles and equipment to the shop.
Performs other related duties as required.

NOTE: The duties and responsibilities listed above are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications for all positions in this class. Each position may not be required to perform all of the essential job functions listed.Three years' experience in automotive repair and maintenance, one-year of which is in heavy truck and or heavy construction equipment engines and special components, including hydraulic equipment maintenance.

Related training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.

Licenses and Certificates 
Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B or class A Maryland driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Preferred Certification
Certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence in Heavy-duty Trucks- T1 (Gasoline Engines) - T-2 (Diesel Engines)- T-4 (Brakes) - T-6 (Electrical Systems).

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions.  Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment.

Conditions of Employment
Employees in this classification may be designated as Emergency/Essential and may be required to work overtime with little or no notice.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination and drug screen and an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.
