Application and Special Instructions

This non-permanent position will work on an intermittent or seasonal basis.
Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in a 12-month period.
The typical number of hours for this position will not exceed 25 hours/week.
Classes this position would be teaching are beginning yoga and aerobics.  

Candidates selected for hire must successfully pass the following:
• AZDPS/FBI Fingerprint Criminal History Check
• Ability to obtain a CPR/First-Aid Certification within 90 days

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Health & Fitness Instructor plans, leads, and instructs group exercise classes. The primary goal is to help participants of various ages improve their physical well-being and achieve fitness goals in a safe manner. The instructor will engage the group in a safe and effective group fitness class of various types such as Yoga, Strength Training, Zumba Chair Fitness, and Indoor Cycling. The instructor will inspect equipment to ensure it is clean, safe, and functioning properly.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation Program Coordinator. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans class instructional activities for various health and fitness classes
  • Ensures the safety of participants as they reach their fitness goals and manages the dynamics of the room
  • Provides feedback, watches participants to provide real-time corrections to form, and accommodates different skill levels
  • Creates an inclusive, positive, and safe classroom environment that encourages confidence
  • Communicates effectively with participants
  • Responsible for supervising 6-12 participants
  • Develops a syllabus for each class
  • Ensures proper equipment monitoring
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

This position entails various days and times, as well as Saturdays, at Recreation Centers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
6 months Post-High School

Work Experience:
One (1) year of relevant experience

Equivalency:
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be
substituted on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Certification in Health and Fitness
Experience working in a recreation center setting with participants ranging in age from seventeen (17) to Seniors.
Experience planning and implementing progressive exercise routines tailored towards specific goals.
