Sr. Automation Engineer

Description

The Sr. Automation Engineer will provide hands-on technical support for the design, implementation, troubleshooting, and optimization of automation systems, including robotics, vision systems, cameras, and downstream equipment. The role will develop and document reliable, repeatable processes, create work instructions, and train personnel on automation operation, safety, and maintenance. The Sr. Automation Engineer will collaborate with molding, tooling, project management, and outside vendors to integrate new equipment, resolve issues, improve processes, and support continuous improvement initiatives focused on production performance, quality, efficiency, and safety.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, implement, and support automation systems within the manufacturing, including robots, vision systems, cameras, and downstream equipment.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize automation systems to improve reliability, repeatability, efficiency, and production performance.
• Create and maintain clear work instructions for automation equipment, including proper operation, safety procedures, setup, troubleshooting, and basic maintenance requirements.
• Train and support operators, technicians, molding personnel, and other relevant employees on the proper operation, safety, and maintenance of automation systems.
• Collaborate with molding personnel, tooling engineers, maintenance, project managers, and outside vendors to establish efficient and repeatable automated processes.
• Support the integration, installation, startup, and qualification of new automation equipment and systems.
• Assist with the integration of robots, EOAT, vision systems, cameras, and auxiliary or downstream equipment into injection molding processes.
• Minimize production downtime, scrap, and quality issues through effective troubleshooting, system improvements, and preventative maintenance support.
• Identify opportunities to improve automation reliability, process consistency, production efficiency, and operator safety.
• Work with outside automation equipment manufacturers and vendors as needed to resolve technical issues and implement system improvements.
• Support engineering and molding teams during equipment and process troubleshooting.
• Assist with the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives throughout the molding department.
• Maintain appropriate documentation related to automation systems, programming changes, equipment configurations, and process improvements.

Required Qualifications:

•  5+ years of experience supporting, troubleshooting, or developing industrial automation systems, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
•  Working knowledge of industrial robots, automation equipment, and related control systems.
•  Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues associated with automated equipment.
•  Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to follow company procedures and work instructions.
•  Ability to understand, develop, and implement automation processes and equipment operating procedures.
•  Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
•  Strong computer skills – Word, Excel in Microsoft Office.
•  Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
•  Reliability and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications:

•  Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, Robotics, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience.
•  Experience programming or modifying industrial robots and automation equipment.
•  Experience with injection molding automation, including robots, EOAT, vision systems, cameras, conveyors, and downstream assembly equipment.
•  Experience with PLCs, HMIs, sensors, safety circuits, and industrial control systems.
•  Experience integrating automation equipment with injection molding machines and auxiliary equipment.
•  Experience working with outside automation equipment manufacturers and vendors.
•  Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
•  Strong math skills and high attention to detail.
•  Logical and critical thinking skills.
•  Ability to multitask and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
•  Ability to work with limited direction.
•  Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Demands / Working Conditions:

•  Safety: Must be aware of and adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
•  Hands-on Equipment Interaction: Must be able to frequently position self to set up, operate, troubleshoot, and make adjustments to injection molding machines, robots, vision systems, and auxiliary or downstream equipment.
•  Facility Mobility: Ability to move throughout the manufacturing facility to effectively support production operations across all shifts.
•  Technical Dexterity: Requires the mechanical aptitude and physical ability to manipulate tools, components, sensors, EOAT, and related automation equipment and perform precise adjustments to machinery.
•  Communication & Mentoring: Must be able to accurately exchange technical information and provide clear instruction when training or mentoring operators, technicians, and molding personnel.
•  Industrial Environment: Work is performed in a manufacturing environment which includes regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, automated machinery, injection molding equipment, and typical machine shop hazards.

Compensation:

Pay: $80,000 - $120,000/yr. (depending on experience)

Hours:

Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week (Mon-Fri), depending on workload.  This position is in-person.
