Summary

Are you a HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic interested in a role that directly supports the delivery of care, ensuring critical heating, cooling, ventilation and refrigeration systems are always operational when they're needed most?

As a HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic at the state-of-the-art new St. Paul's Hospital opening in Vancouver in 2027, you'll play a critical role in maintaining the complex environmental systems that help keep a high-performing healthcare facility safe, comfortable and efficient for patients, staff and visitors.

This includes:

  • Install, repair and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems across a large, dynamic hospital environment
  • Perform preventative maintenance to ensure HVAC/R systems operate reliably and meet strict healthcare, safety and regulatory standards
  • Troubleshoot and repair air handling units, compressors, pumps, fans, motors, controls and refrigeration equipment
  • Operate and program Building Automation Systems (BAS) to optimize system performance and efficiency
  • Perform air balancing tests and system inspections to maintain proper airflow and environmental conditions
  • Work closely with other skilled trades and Facilities teams to support day-to-day operations and long-term infrastructure projects
  • Contribute to a safe, comfortable and functional environment that supports patient care, staff and the broader community

What You Bring

Education and Experience: 

  • Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic or equivalent trade
  • Class “B” Gas Fitter’s License with an electrical endorsement recognized by the Province of BC.
  • Two (2) years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

 Your Day to Day:

  • Review work requests and consult with Supervisor
  • Perform operational and safety risk assessments and coordinate work with user departments
  • Repair, maintain and install heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems including pneumatic, electrical and electronic controls
  • Install and repair refrigeration systems such as fridges, freezers, coolers and ice machines
  • Install motors, controls, switches and piping for gas and other fluids
  • Operate and program Building Automation Systems and related HVAC/R equipment
  • Carry out preventative maintenance programs for HVAC, refrigeration and control systems
  • Perform air balancing tests using equipment such as velometers and static pressure instruments
  • Repair and maintain mechanical equipment including compressors, steam valves, pumps, supply and exhaust fans and sterilizing equipment
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable codes, regulations and safety standards
  • Complete related reports, documentation and maintenance recordsview work requests and consult with Supervisor
