Description

This vacancy may be filled as an Assistant Engineer. The annual salary range for Assistant Engineer is $94,306.13 - $114,630.18.

Under general direction, this classification performs professional level traffic engineering work involving the design, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control equipment and facilities to ensure the safety of the motoring public.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Designs and prepares drawings, maps, grade sheets, profiles, plans and specifications related to a variety of traffic engineering projects; 
  • Performs traffic studies; 
  • Analyzes and implements traffic signal timing plans; 
  • Analyzes accident history;
  • Conducts traffic condition and speed surveys, traffic counts and volume analyses, accident and parking surveys and intersection capacity analyses;
  • Prepares traffic signal, sign and striping and traffic control plans, work orders and cost estimates; 
  • Manages overload, oversize and annual haul permit program; 
  • Prepares and maintains logs, reports, records and schedules; 
  • Evaluates the need and justification for traffic signals, stop signs and other traffic control devices; 
  • Monitors construction contracts for the installation, maintenance and operation of traffic control equipment, traffic signs and street striping; and
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be:

ASSOCIATE TRAFFIC ENGINEER
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in Engineering; and

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of progressively responsible and recent experience in Traffic Engineering.

Registration as a Professional Traffic Engineer in the State of California is required at the time of hire.

Registration as a Civil Engineer may be substituted, provided significant traffic engineering experience can be demonstrated.

ASSISTANT ENGINEER
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; and

EXPERIENCE
: One (1) year of progressively responsible and recent experience performing professional Civil Engineering work.

 
A State of California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate is required.

Traffic Engineering experience is highly desirable.

EVALUATION PROCESS: This recruitment is open until filled, so interested applicants are encouraged to apply immediately. First review of applications may occur the week of October 12, 2026. Interested applicants must submit an online application and a completed supplemental questionnaire. Candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the city will be invited to participate in the examination process for this position which may consist of any or all of the following components: Appraisal interview, a written exercise, or a practical skills assessment.

The City may change these testing and interview dates at its discretion due to departmental staffing and operational needs.
The applicant selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and a thorough background check. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment. A safe driving record is required and must be maintained during period of employment. 
City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
