Primary Job Function:
- Establish, maintain, and provide subject matter expertise for formal divisional management systems and programs across EHS risk management disciplines—including industrial hygiene, process safety, loss prevention, and machine guarding—while also supporting relevant environmental management aspects related to water, waste, and air emissions across EPD manufacturing sites.
- Act as a supporting function to the divisional program managing EHS risk for key Abbott Established Pharmaceutical Division (EPD) suppliers and third-party manufacturers, contributing guidance and technical support to internal and external stakeholders.
Core Job Responsibilities:
- Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing groups to actively support process design, development, and manufacturing, ensuring early identification and reduction of risks associated with the primary job function technical areas.
- Provide support across process design, development, and manufacturing to drive waste weight reduction, enhance waste diversion outcomes, and advance circular economy objectives.
- Provide guidance to sites supporting alignment with applicable process safety and occupational safety standards and frameworks, consistent with Abbott Corporate EHS requirements.
- Support the identification and evaluation of higher‑risk processes, equipment, materials, and operations by providing technical input, recommended assessment approaches, and risk‑based guidance.
- Contribute to divisional EHS performance by providing subject matter input and technical guidance during internal or external reviews, assessments, and reporting activities related to operational EHS risk disciplines.
- Contribute to strategic planning activities for operational EHS risk disciplines by supporting periodic program effectiveness reviews, self‑assessments, and discussions related to operational, product, or regulatory changes.
- Collaborate with Abbott EHS leadership in a technical advisory capacity to support understanding of EHS management approaches, key risks, and potential business impacts related to process and occupational safety disciplines.
- Facilitate and participate in subject matter expert (SME) networks across the EPD network, serving as a technical liaison with Global EHS for these disciplines.
- Collaborate with Abbott EHS leaders to understand EHS management, issues, and business impacts.
- Provide support that all significant EHS aspects and activities are integrated in the Process Lifecycle management. Review and provide input for divisional or site Requests for Capital Expenditure (RCE) to ensure that all significant EHS aspects and activities are properly integrated during the entire Front-End Planning Design Process for new product introduction and global product-transfers and changes/upgrades to existing processes and equipment.
- Enable and support the development and maintenance of formal environmental management systems and programs for water, waste, and air emissions, ensuring adequate oversight. Partner with Operations to ensure sustainability requirements are incorporated into process design and development and product transfer activities supporting New Product Introduction.
- Support the development and implementation of EPD strategies across internal and external manufacturing sites to improve wastewater quality by reducing API concentrations in effluent (e.g., Antimicrobial Resistance Initiative).
- Identify emerging regulations or new requirements impacting EPD products or chemicals used by EPD sites, communicate to the other EPD functions and ensure actions are put in place.
- Keep current on emerging regulatory issues that may impact the business, and provide innovative, achievable, and practical solutions to EPD sites
- Liaise with the regional EHS leaders to engage the procurement functions to ensure EHS risks are known and understood relating to key TPM’s and suppliers.
- Build strong relationships to engage and influence Abbott EPD Supply Chain management on EHS performance improvements and provide technical in-depth EHS knowledge to ensure focus on key risks.
Position Accountability/Scope:
- Position has global EPD responsibility on developing and supporting the execution of the tactical plan on Environmental Sustainability programs for water, waste and air emissions in line with Abbott Corporate EHS Strategy.
- Position will work very closely with applicable EHS and Management personnel at site, divisional and Corporate EHS level.
Minimum Education:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in EHS, Engineering, science, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence with 5+ years of EHS experience in the pharmaceutical and/or chemical industries.
Minimum Experience/Training Required:
- Sustainability experience in the following areas is preferred: water management, API (active pharmaceutical ingredients), circular economy, chemicals handing and waste.
- Serves as a role model for behaviors outlined in the Abbott Competency Cluster.
- Industry experience in the following areas is preferred: third party manufacturing, finished drugs, API, chemicals, plastics & packaging
- 5+ years experience working in corporate business enviroment with senior management, plant managers, and plant EHS managers.
- Positive track record of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external clients.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate with peers, superiors, customers, regulators and governmental officials.
- Extensive team leadership experience involving cross-divisional and cross-functional participants is required.
- Needs to be able to travel approximately 40%.
- Fluency in English a must, Spanish is desirable. additional languages such as Portuguese, Dutch, German, Russian is a plus.
- Exhibit high degree of business judgment, interpersonal, negotiations and communication skills with multiple functions, business units and external partners to successfully perform the role.
