Description


Performs a variety of technical duties involving the installation, configuration, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of public safety computer systems, servers, radio communications equipment, and other electronic technology used throughout the City of Kingsport.

  • Installs, programs, configures, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots two-way radio, communications, and related electronic equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots computers, servers, peripherals, and related public safety IT equipment.
  • Installs and maintains antennas, cabling, and related communications infrastructure.
  • Installs and maintains public safety communications, computer, video, radar, and related equipment in City-owned vehicles.
  • Uses appropriate electronic, radio frequency (RF), computer, and other diagnostic tools to identify and resolve equipment and system problems.
  • Responds to emergency communications and technology issues to restore critical City services.
  • Maintains and repairs communications tower equipment, antennas, transmission lines, and associated components.
  • Performs testing, maintenance, and certification of radar and other specialized electronic equipment.
  • Maintains equipment, configuration, repair, and inventory records as required.
  • Provides technical support and assistance to public safety departments for communications, computers, and electronic systems.
  • Coordinates with vendors and contractors for equipment installation, maintenance, and repair as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of two-way radio communications, electronics, computer systems, servers, networking, and related technology.
  • Knowledge of methods and equipment used to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair communications, computer, and electronic systems.
  • Knowledge of radio frequency (RF), antenna, cabling, and basic network principles.
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use of tools, test equipment, and materials associated with communications, electronics, and IT equipment.
  • Skill in diagnosing and resolving problems involving two-way radio, electronic, computer, server, and network equipment.
  • Skill in installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing communications and technology equipment.
  • Skill in using electronic, RF, and computer-based testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, schematics, and equipment documentation.
  • Ability to respond effectively to service interruptions involving critical communications and technology systems.
  • Ability to safely perform work on ladders, towers, elevated locations, and in varying environmental conditions as required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with City personnel, vendors, contractors, and the general public.

High school graduate or equivalent; plus, experience equivalent to two years of experience in the repair of mobile communications equipment; or IT field or similar field may substitute for one year required experience.
