$116,823.00 - $186,917.00

The Director coordinates, plans, directs, implements and manages the administrative, financial and operational responsibilities for the Birthplace, which includes Postpartum, Newborn Nursery, Antepartum, and Labor & Delivery. The Director is responsible for direct patient care and clinical operations for the Birthplace. They assure that competent, compassionate patient care is uniformly provided to patients in Maternity Services settings. The Director develops, implements, and evaluates policies, programs and services consistent with the hospital's mission and the department's vision and philosophy. They provide direction and support to unit-based leadership, and collaborates with other service and department leaders toward attainment of short- and long-term goals and objectives. As a member of the nursing leadership team, the Director participates in the efficient and effective management of the department of nursing, and the development of its strategic plan in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President of Women and Children's Services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development of evidence-based departmental and program goals to support the hospital goals and mission statement.
  • Works collaboratively with the AVP, department chairs, and medical directors for OBGYN/Maternity Services
  • Facilitates departmental plans to achieve overall goals of the organization.
  • Participates in identification of indicators to measure accomplishments of strategic plan
  • Develops collaborative relationships with advanced practice nursing, medical staff, and leadership to achieve departmental goals.
  • Supports and communicates the organizational plan to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards.
  • Provides administrative direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation and administration of current policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Evaluates program outcomes and makes modifications as needed.
  • Analyzes policy decisions to determine short and long-term financial and organizational implications and prepares related reports reflecting recommendations.
  • Maintains all policies, procedures, and systems in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Birthplace
  • Monitor and review the work of departmental personnel to ensure attainment of departmental goals.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership techniques as indicated through high productivity.
  • Responds to changes in work efficiency in an effective manner.
  • Educate and market the roles and responsibilities of nursing to a variety of audiences in the lay and professional community.
  • Plans the operating and capital departmental budgets by analyzing program needs, considering resources necessary for patient care, and developing plans on both a short and long-term basis.
  • Prepares the departmental budgets after determining fiscal requirements of projected needs.
  • Manages the approved budget and all accounts in a fiscally prudent, responsible, and cost-effective manner to stay within limitations of the budget.
  • Prepares operational and analytical reports that identify trends, opportunities and problems and suggests solutions.
  • Maintains and monitors operating statistics for the department/programs adjusting staffing, supplies, or capital expenditures to activity status.
  • Selects qualified and quality personnel.
  • Mentors, counsels, and disciplines staff to ensure quality of work and adherence to hospital policies and procedures, while engaging in and advocating for succession planning for nurse leaders.
  • Establishes standards for all department personnel by having criteria-based job descriptions.
  • Conducts review of appropriate personnel to ensure current required license, certification, or registration is maintained to meet all minimum job qualifications to avoid citations.
  • Establishes work schedules and assignments in conformance with current federal, state, local wage and hour laws, and hospital policies.
  • Provides effective distribution and utilization of personnel based on department needs by collecting and analyzing data to determine changing departmental trends.
  • Provides in-service and continuing education needs for all personnel in the department.
  • Provide leadership with a mentoring focus to assist direct reports to succeed.
  • Be accountable for self-development and keep current on clinical, leadership, education and healthcare topics through continuing education.
  • Participates in, or leads as directed, various hospital committees, meeting established objectives.
  • Actively participates in, and supports, hospital-wide functions and activities in order to promote the organization.
  • Conducts regular leadership rounds and staff meetings with employees.
  • Ensures the confidentiality of all patient and hospital information is maintained by department staff according to established procedure.
  • Monitor the compliance of professional, regulatory and governmental standards
  • Maintain liaison with administration, quality, and risk management on regulatory agency investigations pertinent to the nursing organization.
  • Formulates, implements, and monitors the departmental safety program.
  • Supports a system that encourages the identification and analysis of errors and near misses in the context of a safety culture.
  • Assures all mandatory safety training is accomplished, and proper training records are maintained.
  • Conducts departmental safety inspections to assure compliance with hospital safety standards as evidenced by documented inspection reports.
  • Attends all mandatory hospital in-service education.
  • Is aware of, and compliant with, all hospital and regulatory agency safety goals and objectives.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing - required
  • Master's Degree of Science in Nursing - preferred
  • 4-6 years in Maternity/OBGYN High Risk Inpatient Nursing - required
  • 1-3 years of Progressive Experience in Nursing Leadership - required
  • Knowledge of maternity or specialty related certifications
  • Skills from maternity or specialty related certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in NYS Upon Hire - required

Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
