Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Senior Underwriter Engineering & Construction – France in our Property, Energy and Construction team.
As part of our growth strategy in France, we are launching our Construction line of business and are looking for an experienced Senior Underwriter Engineering & Construction to join our Paris office.
The successful candidate will play a key role in building a profitable and sustainable Engineering & Construction portfolio across sectors including infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, power generation and large construction projects.
The position will report directly to the Head of Property, Energy and Construction - France and will work closely with underwriting, risk engineering, claims and distribution teams across the organization to support business growth and deliver high-quality solutions to clients and brokers.
Working in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment, you will combine technical underwriting expertise, commercial acumen and market engagement to help establish a strong presence in the French Engineering & Construction insurance market.

What you’ll be doing:
Underwriting & Risk Assessment
• Develop and execute the French Engineering market strategy (CAR/ EAR) in alignment with Continental Europe leadership. This includes projects in power, renewable energy, infrastructure and construction sectors.
• Analyse technical risk information and determine appropriate coverage, terms and pricing.
• Negotiate insurance conditions with brokers and clients.
• Ensure disciplined underwriting and portfolio management in line with company guidelines.
• Contribute to large and complex account discussions and multinational programmes.
Market & Distribution :
• Act as Sompo’s senior ambassador in the French market, cultivating strong relationships with brokers, clients, and key industry stakeholders.
• Drive new business development and retention through proactive engagement, negotiation, and strategic account management.
• Strengthen Sompo’s broker positioning and visibility through targeted marketing, thought leadership, and participation in industry forums.
Underwriting & Portfolio Management
• Oversee underwriting quality, governance, and portfolio balance across risk segments and industries in line with regional strategy
• Provide guidance on complex risks, major accounts, and global program structures.
• Ensure underwriting documentation, data quality, and contract integrity meet Sompo’s standards.
Operational & Cross-Functional role:
• Collaborate closely with the other Lines of Business to drive cross sell opportunities and ensure alignment of appetite, pricing and governance
• Collaborate closely with Claims, Risk Engineering, Distribution, and other internal partners to deliver a seamless client experience.
• Support regional initiatives, innovation projects, and strategic developments that enhance Sompo’s competitive position.
• Represent Sompo in high-level commercial negotiations, press engagements, and corporate communications activities.
What you’ll bring:
• 10+ years of underwriting experience in Engineering insurance.
• Deep expertise in large and complex Engineering risks.
• A strong, established network within the France broker and risk manager community.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
• High integrity, emotional intelligence, and resilience.
• Strong understanding of the regulatory environment and its impact on underwriting and business development.
• Fluency in English and French.
• Willingness to travel internationally as required.
