Essential Job Duties:

  • Trim, prune, and remove trees and branches that pose a risk to power lines, poles, and other utility infrastructure, ensuring safe and efficient removal with minimal disruption
  • Maintain a safe distance between vegetation and utility equipment to minimize risks of outages, fires, or electrical hazards
  • Conduct regular inspections of areas around power lines to assess potential hazards posed by trees or branches
  • Work in both urban and rural environments, managing vegetation near overhead and underground utility lines
  • Use specialized techniques to safely bring down trees without damaging surrounding property, infrastructure, or utility equipment
  • Identify hazardous trees or plants that are diseased, dead, or structurally weak, and may fall onto utility lines during storms or high winds
  • Recommend and perform removal or pruning of dangerous trees before they cause disruptions or safety risks
  • Operate power tools and equipment such as chainsaws, pole saws, aerial lifts, chipper trucks, stump grinders, and cranes to perform tree trimming and removal
  • Maintain records of tree maintenance activities, including tree removal, pruning schedules, and any damage caused by vegetation to utility infrastructure
  • Report vegetation-related hazards to utility companies or local authorities to ensure timely responses to potential issues
  • Track vegetation management progress and document completed work for utility records or regulatory compliance
  • Coordinate with line workers and utility crews to ensure vegetation is cleared around power lines before work begins or during maintenance
  • Implement long-term vegetation management strategies by recommending or planting trees and shrubs that are less likely to interfere with power lines
  • Ensure work is done in compliance with environmental regulations, minimizing damage to natural habitats and wildlife
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s culture of safety and employee ownership
  • Comply with applicable federal, provincial, and municipal laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings

Other Duties:

  • Occasional travel outside of the office may be required
  • During emergencies or natural disasters may be required to be on duty for the duration of the disaster
  • Works around excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, woodchipper and must wear proper personal protective equipment

Supervisory Duties:

(Duties of supervising others.)

  • Supervise crew members to ensure that safety procedures are followed, especially when working around high-voltage electrical equipment, including tree trimming practices
  • Train and support team members in learning about tree identification, tree removal procedures, tree disease identification and treatment, and other aspects of the job as needed
  • Ensure the safe operation of equipment near live electrical lines, using techniques and protective gear that reduce the risk of electrical shock

Knowledge, Skills & Ability Requirements:

  • Knowledge of safety protocols around live electrical lines and the ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices
  • Familiarity with local environmental laws, tree preservation ordinances, and best practices
  • Ability to guide and lead team members on the job
  • Strong attention to detail, focusing on tree health, proper pruning techniques, and structural stability
  • Knowledge of local utility regulations and environmental guideline
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and direct others on the job
  • Ability to lift move and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis and up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks, as new situations continue to emerge
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products utilizing the latest operating systems
  • Experience with Apple-based products
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service focusing on rapport-building, listening, questioning and patience
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of employees, both technical and non-technical
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

Education, Certification & Experience Requirements:

(The minimum level of education obtained, certifications held, or experience in years acceptable for the role.)

  • Current UA/ UTT/ CUA Certification and the ability to maintain it
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license, and a current Drivers Abstract with less than 6 demerit points
  • Applicant must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening

Other Preferred Requirements: (driver’s license, CDL, pesticide or herbicide license, CPR or first-aid certified)

  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR certificates or be willing to obtain
