Hiring Unit:
Campus Life & Engagement (CL&E) supports all McGill students by connecting them to resources and creating meaningful opportunities for involvement. They guide students in navigating the McGill student experience through orientation and transition programming and by providing student life opportunities across campus for students to develop their interests and skills.
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Associate Director, New Student Experience or her designate, the French Programming Program Assistant coordinates peer-led French Language learning opportunities activities during the fall and winter semesters, allowing students to practice their French while building connections on-campus and in Montreal. This will include planning and carrying out different activities including cultural visits, French-language volunteer placements, seasonal and community events and French Lunch conversation Events while promoting social connection and a sense of community.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and plan French language programming in collaboration with the team, scheduling events at opportune times and liaising with on- and off-campus partners in the planning process.
- Reach out to community organizations to organize activities during which students will be able to practice their French conversational skills.
- Act as a facilitator during events, encouraging and prompting students as needed to promote active participation and French language learning, and guiding them where necessary.
- Track participation. Reach out to other partners to collaborate on promotion and sharing best (better) practices.
- Collaborate with CL&E’s Communications team on the promotion of French-language events, determining effective channels of promotion and collaborative promotional opportunities with partners, including McGill LearnFrench website.
- Liaise with students and university organizations for outreach, information exchange and collaboration; diplomatic communications and relationship-building.
- Track results and prepare a final activity report, detailing number of participants and number of students hours implemented during the period.
- Perform other duties and tasks, as required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Currently registered as a full-time student in any degree program at McGill University
- Excellent French, spoken and written, with knowledge of grammatical terms and ability to provide some linguistic explanations
- Group facilitation experience, preferred
- Background in education, tutoring, or pedagogy, an asset.
- Work Study qualified, an asset
- Leadership experience, an asset
- Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 (advanced) for both written and oral communication on a scale of 0-4.
OTHER QUALIFYING SKILLS AND/OR ABILITIES
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Demonstrated attention to detail and time management skills
- Reliable, Ability to be focused on results, yet flexible to improve the student experience.
- Organized and professional
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Candidate receives regular review of work. Employee works within the framework of established procedures and receives direction as to objectives and policies. Work supervised may be of a routine or variable nature.
