Description of Work

This posting is intended to fill a total of (2) Transportation Worker III positions: 60021245 and 60021251. You only need to apply once to be considered for all positions.

This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Mecklenburg County Maintenance Unit. This position will perform advanced roadway maintenance and construction activities while supervising and training assigned crew members. Supervise and direct daily work activities of a maintenance crew; train employees in equipment operation and safety procedures; perform asphalt repairs, pipe installation assistance, right-of-way clearing, and work zone setup; operate equipment including asphalt maintainer, patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe; perform grounds and minor building maintenance, including fire extinguisher inspections; manage yard inventory, safety gear, and tool upkeep; load and deliver materials to job sites; and respond to emergencies such as snow/ice removal, storm cleanup, and traffic incidents. Must have working knowledge of assigned equipment operation, ability to supervise and follow oral and written instructions, ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly, ability to work in extreme weather and uneven terrain, and the ability to work near high volumes of traffic and heavy equipment. May require nights, weekends, holidays, emergency call-back, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather events. Safety toe shoes required.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:

*No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years
*No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
*Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
*If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade: NC06: Salary Range: $35,596 - $62,294


Management prefers applicants with the following:


  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as, directing the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
