GENERAL:

The Home Repairs Field Technician plays a key role in helping homeowners across our tri-county service area (Monroe, Ontario, and Wayne counties) maintain safe and stable housing by performing critical home repairs that address essential health, safety, and accessibility needs. Working under the direction of the Home Repairs Manager (HRM), this position provides skilled, hands-on construction support to ensure repair projects are completed safely, efficiently, and of high quality. The Home Repairs Technician works in owner occupied homes, collaborates with staff, subcontractors, and volunteers, and helps identify and address field conditions encountered during project execution. As a representative of Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity (GRHFH), this individual serves as an ambassador of the organization’s vision: a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform hands-on construction and repair work daily to support the successful completion of home repair projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Perform intermediate carpentry, drywall repairs, painting, and window and door installation.
  • Construct accessibility improvements, including wheelchair ramps, railings, porches, and other modifications.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Install grab bars and perform other home safety modifications as needed.
  • Identify appropriate repair methods and troubleshooting problems encountered during project execution to ensure work is completed safely and to established quality standards. 
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including progress notes, completion photos, materials used, and relevant site conditions.
  • Lead and work alongside volunteers & provide them with clear instruction, appropriate tasks, and hands-on guidance based on their skill and experience levels.
  • Coordinate with the Procurement & Warehouse Manager to ensure materials and supplies are procured, picked up, delivered, and organized as needed for critical home repair projects. 
  • Partner with the HRM to establish and maintain relationships with qualified contractors and vendors to ensure ongoing program support. 
  • Maintain daily communication with the HRM regarding project progress, challenges, and other operational needs.
  • Supports the HRM in developing and maintaining ongoing project schedules, budgets, and scopes. 
  • Safely operate company vehicles in compliance with all applicable traffic laws and DOT regulations.  
  • Provide clear and respectful communication to homeowners throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring a positive and dignified experience.
  • Ability to plan in advance, tools/materials needed on a day to day basis

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and participate in special organizational events
  • Assist with marketing efforts and participate in annual fundraising events
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Working knowledge of residential construction, building systems, materials, repair methods, tools, and safety practices.

Ability to independently perform a variety of residential repairs with a high standard of quality and workmanship.

Ability to read and understand basic scopes of work, construction drawings, manufacturer instructions, and product specifications.

Ability to assess field conditions, troubleshoot residential repair issues, and identify appropriate solutions or when specialized assistance is required.

Demonstrated ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and equipment commonly used in residential construction and repair.

Strong judgment, problem-solving skills, reliability, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in occupied residential environments.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally with homeowners, volunteers, subcontractors, and staff.

Ability to provide clear, hands-on instruction and direction to volunteers with varying levels of construction experience.

Ability to safely lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in residential construction, remodeling, home repair, property maintenance, or a related skilled trade; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Demonstrated experience performing residential repair work across multiple construction or maintenance disciplines preferred.

Valid New York State driver’s license and driving record that meets organizational insurability requirements; ability to safely operate company vehicles, tow trailers, and transport materials and equipment.

Ability to obtain and maintain required safety certifications and training, including CPR/First Aid, Habitat Competent Person, and OSHA 10.

Experience working with or providing instruction to volunteers and/or subcontractors preferred.
