Description
Price the work. Shape the job. See your numbers built.
About our client
Our client is an established mechanical contractor with more than 30 years in the Greater Boston market. With 150+ team members, they self-perform commercial HVAC and plumbing for some of New England's most demanding buildings: life sciences and pharma, hospitals, higher education and large industrial projects.
GCs and CMs bring them in early, for design-assist and negotiated work as well as hard bids, because their numbers hold up. An in-house BIM and coordination team and a dedicated prefabrication shop mean the estimate you build is the job the field builds.
Business is growing. Their service and maintenance division is expanding, and the estimating department is growing with it. That is why this seat is open.
The role
You own the number from the first page turn to bid day.
- Build complete HVAC and plumbing estimates for everything from quick service quotes to multimillion-dollar new construction
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs: piping, fittings, valves, ductwork, equipment, fixtures, specialties, insulation and supports
- Build labor from man-hours, crews and productivity, not just unit prices
- Read the full set: drawings, specs, addenda, P&IDs and equipment schedules. Catch the gaps before they become change orders
- Solicit, level and compare vendor and subcontractor pricing
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks, and decide what will drive cost on site
- Support design-assist and negotiated work with conceptual budgets, systems comparisons and value engineering
- Hand off cleanly to Project Management, and compare estimated cost to actual cost after the job so the next number is sharper
What you bring
- 5+ years estimating commercial or industrial HVAC and/or plumbing work, with a mechanical subcontractor or a GC's MEP group
- Strong takeoff skills and a solid grasp of mechanical systems, NFPA and plumbing codes
- Experience with QuickPen / Trimble, QuoteSoft, FastEST or similar, plus Bluebeam and Excel
- Experience pricing complex or regulated work (labs, healthcare, process piping, medical gas) is a big plus
- A trade background in pipefitting, plumbing or HVAC is a plus, not a requirement
- Organised, detail-driven, and calm when three bids land in the same week
- Valid driver's license
What's in it for you
- A real voice at the table. Estimators here take part in decisions and have a direct impact on the bottom line
- Complex, technical work: pharma, labs, hospitals and campus projects, not just repeat fit-outs
- Room to grow as the estimating department expands
- $110,000 to $135,000 base plus profit sharing
- Strong benefits: health, dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) with company match, HRA/FSA and tuition reimbursement
- Stability: an open-shop contractor with a 30-year record and a long list of repeat GC and owner clients
