DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey-level classification in the professional engineering series. This classification is distinguished from the Associate Engineer by the level of responsibility, independence of action, complexity of assignments, and professional licensure requirements. While the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work under general supervision, the Senior Engineer exercises substantial independent judgment in the development of engineering solutions, serves as project manager for major and complex projects, reviews and approves engineering work products, oversees the work of consultants, mentors engineering staff, and provides technical leadership on engineering matters.
