POSITION SUMMARY

Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO) offers screening for serious diseases to the approximately 140,000 babies born in Ontario each year. The NSO laboratory uses complex testing methods including tandem mass spectrometry, automated immunoassays, HPLC, automated enzymatic assays, and molecular genetic assays.

NSO is committed to continuous quality improvement and being global leaders in screening through research, development, education, and innovation.

The senior technologist in the Newborn Screening Laboratory provides technical expertise and supervision for laboratory staff, and works in close collaboration with the laboratory director and other laboratory staff, in addition to the medical and operations directors.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide daily laboratory supervision with respect to:
    • technical guidance
    • trouble-shooting
    • research and development activities
    • preparation/monitoring of schedules re: appropriate staffing levels as required
  • Maintain policy and procedure manuals in accordance with licensing and IQMH Accreditation standards
  • Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities:
    • ensure appropriate and timely testing
    • introduce/evaluate new reagents, equipment and procedures and coordinate subsequent training
    • analyze data to suggest corrective actions as necessary
  • Provide laboratory bench coverage and/or case-checking as required
  • Summarize, interpret and evaluate laboratory statistics, including workload unit data
  • Participate in in-service education
  • Organize orientation and training for new staff and trainees
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, retention and performance appraisal of staff, as required
  • Maintain and monitor an inventory control system
  • Promote an effective working environment with emphasis on professional ethics, effective communication, and team participation
  • Monitor and enforce established safety regulations in collaboration with the laboratory safety officer(s)
  • Participate in the ongoing quality improvement initiatives including review and follow-up of nonconformance/incident reports
  • Participate in other tasks/projects as required
  • Draft and/or review policies/procedures for Lab-related issues

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Criminal Record Check (Essential)
  • Registration with the CMLTO (or eligibility to register) (Essential)
  • Masters level preparation in a related field of study (Preferred)
  • Ability to perform, at a high level, technical responsibilities of a technologist (Essential)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an accredited laboratory (Preferred)
  • Some form of relevant supervisory experience (Preferred)
  • Good knowledge of IQMH Accreditation requirements (Preferred)
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, organize workload and establish priorities (Essential)
  • Effective oral and written presentation and communication (Essential)
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and flexibility (Essential)
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure (Essential)
  • Demonstrated interest in personal professional development (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of computers and software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint (Essential)
  • Bilingualism (English/French) (Preferred)
     

(Note: experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic/experience requirements).

Please note that location may be subject to change at any time at the discretion of the employer. Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.  This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
 

Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
