A rare opportunity to lead a high-impact, system-wide portfolio. Reporting to the Director of Children’s Services, you’ll lead a senior team and oversee education, SEND, inclusion, skills and employability- driving outcomes for children, families and communities during a period of transformation; a crucial leader within SEND reforms and partnership collaboration. With the council due a full SEND inspection, you will drive the focus and clarity across services to achieve excellent practice and strong outcomes for Children, Learners & Families.
Your role as Director of Education:
- Provide visible, system‑wide leadership across education, participation, skills, SEND and inclusion
- Act as the principal professional adviser on education standards, school improvement and learner achievement
- Lead and assure delivery of statutory duties, including key agendas in Inclusion, sufficiency of school places and safeguarding of vulnerable children
- Drive whole‑system improvement, performance management and financial sustainability across the service
- Build and sustain powerful partnerships with colleagues across the system, members, schools, FE, HE, employers and regional and national stakeholders
You will communicate a compelling vision, embed a customer‑focused and innovative culture and champion inclusion, social mobility and child poverty reduction. You will also play a critical role corporately, enabling senior leaders to focus on council‑wide priorities while ensuring your services consistently deliver impact and value for money.
Your experience as Director of Education:
- Significant senior leadership experience within Educational Statutory services in a local authority setting.
- Proven track record of raising standards, inclusion, school improvement and SEND delivery
- Strong background in safeguarding, statutory compliance and risk management
- Experience of leading complex transformation, commissioning and culture change in line with the SEND reforms.
- Political acumen with the ability to influence elected members and executive leaders through collaborative and decisive leadership.
