Position Overview:

Provides on-site and remote advanced technical support to one or more clinical and/or pathology Laboratories. Coordinates and/or carries out, daily laboratory information systems (LIS) operations.
Coordinates the completion of LIS activities between operations, vendors and multiple Sutter Health Information Systems (SHIS) departments to ensure end-users are supported. Functions in the role of “subject matter expert” and higher level “trouble-shooter” to support end-user decision-making and LIS problem resolution. Places order for new or replacement LIS hardware. Coordinates and carries-out a variety of tasks to assist with the maintenance and effective functioning of the LIS, including database validation, monitoring of logs and maintenance of fee schedules. Performs a variety of basic and complex tasks in support of the laboratory/pathology quality assurance program, including generating reports, conducting audits and participating in projects or initiatives that include LIS changes. Participates in periodic CAP, CLIA and/or the Joint Commission (TJC) onsite accreditation surveys, acting as the subject matter expert for policies, processes and procedures related to information management. Participates in the development of policies, processes and procedures related to laboratory information management to maintain informational integrity within the LIS and to protect patient privacy and confidentiality. Advises laboratory/pathology operations on ways to utilize the LIS to optimize efficiency and effectiveness.
Also develops LIS training material and assists in training end-users to optimize the utilization and functionality of the LIS.

Job Description:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's: Biology, computer science, information management or technology, medical technology, physical science or related field

  • OR Other: Military education/experience

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

  • CLS-Generalist - Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist

  • OR CLS Limited License


TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years recent relevant experience


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in the use of computer applications (such as Microsoft Office Suite), networks, interfaces, protocols, and decision support systems.

  • Advanced understanding of laboratory operations, laboratory quality management, the entire laboratory workflow (pre-, post- and analytic phases), medical terminology, and billing. Maintains knowledge at “subject matter expert” level for one or more areas of the LIS and the laboratory.

  • Attention to detail with good time management and organization skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple projects and objectives in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as be part of the team, while completing assignments with minimal supervision and within standardized policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Ability to recognize and evaluate a variety of complex problems. Integrates knowledge of the laboratory/pathology workflow to develop, recommend and/or coordinate a resolution to problems.    

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally while building cooperative partnerships with team members, end users, external vendors and other healthcare providers to achieve department and corporate objectives.

  • Working knowledge of project management. Ability to understand the roles and key contributions of project team members and to coordinate their efforts to produce the desired outcomes.

  • Integrates knowledge of the laboratory/pathology workflow to extract data and create ad-hoc reports, as required by laboratory management.

  • Advanced knowledge of downstream applications and core systems integration.

  • Working knowledge of Health Level 7 (HL7) specifications

  • Expert knowledge of data and application development lifecycle methodologies.

  • Working knowledge of laboratory/pathology regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Pay Range is $69.93 to $97.89 / hour

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is only one component of Sutter Health’s comprehensive total rewards program. Eligible positions also include a comprehensive benefits package.
