COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE (CPW)

The Northeast Region is a major, geographical based organizational unit of the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife, covering the Northeast quadrant of Colorado. The Northeast Region is responsible for administering and managing fifteen state parks, five state wildlife administrative areas, and all of the ancillary operations, programs, projects, and staff and fiscal resources relating to state parks and wildlife activities in the Northeast Region. This work unit exists to implement the goals and objectives of
Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s strategic long-range and operational plans to accomplish the legislative mandate of protecting, conserving, managing, and enhancing the state’s wildlife resources.

The CWD technician position is responsible for working cooperatively with district wildlife managers, other technicians, biologists, customer service representatives, and hunters to collect samples from hunter-harvested deer, elk, and moose heads so that they can be submitted for CWD testing. The CWD technician position is also responsible for conducting mandatory inspections of hunter-harvested moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, black bear, mountain lion, and bobcat, and will coordinate with law enforcement as needed. Additionally, this position will be recording data, handling money, providing excellent customer service, and performing other duties as assigned. Training will be provided on how to remove tissue samples from deer, elk, and moose for CWD testing and perform mandatory inspections of hunter-harvested moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, black bear, bobcat, and mountain lion.

Beyond CWD sampling and mandatory inspections, the CWD technician position is also responsible for maintaining, sanitizing, and handling equipment safely along with cleaning the walk-in cooler and office space. Position may also assist the front desk staff with selling licenses/park passes and with registrations of vehicles (boats, OHVs, and snowmobiles). The CWD technician may have opportunities to gain field experience by assisting biologists/researchers with projects or by going on ride-alongs with wildlife officers if the technician is available and interested.

Uniforms:
Select uniform items will be provided. CWD Technician will be responsible for providing dark blue jeans without holes/embellishments, neutral colored closed toed shoes/boots, and a neutral colored belt. The technician will be required to purchase these limited uniform items at their own expense.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older 
  • Must have a current & valid driver’s license or reliable transportation
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions and lift 50lbs
  • Must be willing and able to work 40 hours per weekMust be available to work some holidays such as Veteran’s Day.
  • The work-site will provide some uniform items, however the employee will be required to purchase limited uniform items at their own expense.

  • Ability to interact positively with the public and staff in various situations
  • Previous experience handling money and working with the public preferred
  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills to deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers
  • Previous computer experience with MS Office Suite/Google App Suite preferred
  •  Preference may be given to applicants with or working towards a Natural Resources degree or similar education
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience and/or interest in hunting and/or fishing
  • Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver's license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle. To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:
    • o Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
    • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
    • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
