This position will assist in the technical and tactical preparation, training and competitive instruction of cross country and mid-distance/distance student-athletes as well as assist in the coordination of the operational and administrative activities of the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track and Field program.
These duties will range from interacting with current student-athletes, planning training sessions and workouts, assisting with team travel, compiling and organizing recruiting material, to assisting with all Cross Country and Track home events.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience coaching in the sports of track & field and cross country at the collegiate level.
- High degree of computer proficiency in a variety of software applications, including MS Office (specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel).
- Demonstrated proficiency with technical applications and an enterprise student information system.
- Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and use initiative. Must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree.
Conditions of Employment:
- Work schedule includes frequent evenings and weekends as well as overnight travel to sport events.
- Must meet physical requirements for the job, including the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
- Yearly successful completion of NCAA compliance certification.
- CPR certification or obtained within six months of hire.
- This position is restricted to the availability of funding.
- This position is restricted to a specific term.
Job Duties:
30% - Program Administration:
- Assist the coaching staff with day-to-day operations of the program.
- Assist with all administrative responsibilities as required by the Athletics Department, including the utilization of Workday, TeamWorks, and other software/applications needed for program operations.
- Coordinate with the Athletics Business Office and Anthony Travel regarding all team travel needs (hotels, buses, flights, meals, etc.).
- Serve and assist as the meet administrator for all home Cross Country and Track & Field meets and events.
- Coordinate all aspects of events run by the Track & Field/Cross Country program (e.g. HS competitions, Massey Cancer Center 5k, etc.).
- Serve as main liaison to the Athletics Business Office and Equipment Services.
50% - Coaching:
- Assist in programming, implementing and executing preparation, training and competition strategies for men’s and women’s Cross Country and mid-distance/distance student-athletes.
- Work with assigned strength and conditioning coach to design and implement weight room schedule and strength programs to best fit the developmental needs of student-athletes in event group.
- Collaborate with Sports Medicine and Sports Performance staff to ensure student-athlete welfare for healthy participation in sport.
- Facilitate student-athlete academic success through resources offered by academic support.
- Support student-athletes in entire men’s and women’s program as directed by Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.
15% - Recruiting:
- Assist in the identification and engagement of high school and transfer prospective student-athletes for recruitment to W&M.
- Follow recruiting strategy as outlined and defined by Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, which may include shifting priorities at Director’s discretion.
- Help organize official and unofficial campus visits with prospects and their families. Within the guidelines of the NCAA, handle incoming communications from recruits regarding their visit.
- Abide by all regulations so as to never cause W&M to be penalized for a breach of NCAA rules.
- Assist the coaching staff with all prospective recruiting travel needs (hotels, flights, and meals); coordinate efforts with the Athletic Department Travel Coordinator.
- Send questionnaires and transcript requests to prospects and high school coaches.
- Make recruiting material for social media platforms by developing and/or researching creative ideas and/or facts about the college and putting them on social media platforms for Tribe Cross Country/Track & Field such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
- Prepare recruiting packets given to each prospective student athlete.
5% - External Communication:
- Maintain informative and helpful working relationships with current and prospective student-athletes and their families, W&M alumni, Athletic Department personnel, high school coaches and the W&M campus community.
Additional Job Description:
Salary: up to $55,000, commensurate with experience and internal alignment.
