UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Sheet Metal Mechanic Lead.

Work Schedule

  • Full time, Monday through Friday, 6:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.

  • This position is based at the Plant Services Building on the Seattle campus and is not eligible for telework.

About this opportunity

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor II, the Sheet Metal Mechanic Lead plans, coordinates and performs journey-level sheet metal construction, fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair work across more than 220 University facilities. The position provides day-to-day leadership for assigned personnel, supports project planning and execution, ensures compliance with applicable safety and quality standards, and collaborates with supervisors, project managers, other trades, contractors and campus partners to deliver reliable, cost-effective services in support of the University community.

Key Responsibilities – 100%

Construction Program Execution

  • Plan, schedule, direct and perform journey-level sheet metal construction, maintenance, repair and fabrication work for campus buildings and grounds to meet production demands and quality standards.

  • Determine project scope; develop cost estimates, material requirements and fabrication/installation solutions; collaborate with project managers on project planning and estimating.

  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints and specifications; lead construction projects and modifications; inspect work for quality, code compliance and project requirements; coordinate project changes with project managers.

  • Oversee the design, fabrication, installation and repair of metal components and systems; procure, receive and manage materials and supplies required for assigned work.

  • Use work management, scheduling and office software to manage work records, schedules, communications and reports.

  • Safely operate tools, machinery, aerial lifts, forklifts and UW vehicles to transport personnel, equipment and materials to job sites.

Workplace Communication and Collaboration

  • Coordinate and communicate with supervisors, project managers, UW Facilities shops and campus partners to support project delivery, resolve issues and provide project status updates.

  • Assist the shop supervisor with work scheduling, project prioritization, recruitment activities, employee performance feedback, timecard accuracy and process improvement initiatives.

  • Support management directives and comply with UW, UW Facilities and Maintenance & Construction policies, procedures and accountability requirements.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety regulations, including SDS requirements, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs), PPE standards and safe work practices; promote and maintain a safe work environment.

  • Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, codes, materials and best practices to deliver quality workmanship and cost-effective solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year, full-time experience as a journey sheet metal mechanic, or equivalent trade skill. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain productive working relationships with employees, supervisors, customers and a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, customer service, organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to anticipate issues, adapt to changing priorities and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply applicable standards, regulations, policies and procedures and work effectively within a complex regulatory environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize and coordinate multiple assignments, maintain professionalism and composure in a fast-paced, customer service-driven environment, and contribute effectively as a member of a team.

  • Demonstrated integrity, sound judgment, strong work ethic and a positive approach to working with others.

  • Knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and safe work practices.

  • Preferred experience with leading or coordinating the work of others, computerized maintenance management systems, Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent productivity software, architectural envelope systems, and SMACNA construction standards and design guidelines.

Workplace Conditions

  • May be required to accept variable work shift.

  • Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using appropriate safety precautions.

  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials is required.

  • Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions.

  • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.

  • Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.

  • Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.

  • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.

  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

  • Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.

Department Introduction

UW Facilities (UWF) manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a diverse set of roles. Our organization is comprised of multiple groups including Operations, Asset Management, Campus Energy Utilities & Operations, and other smaller units. Operations is the largest group in UWF and has the most direct responsibility for ensuring the University is ready for business each day. Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
